[Japan] Famitsu sales for CY 2023 (Top 100 Software, Hardware, more)
Famitsu have shared their latest report on video games sales in Japan, covering the Calendar Year 2023 (to be more precise, the period going from December 26th 2022 to December 31st, 2023, so 53 weeks in total).
Software
Unsurprisingly, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was the best-selling game in Japan with nearly 2 million units sold at retail alone. It won’t be long before it outsells its predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2.264.000 units sold to date). Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Pikmin 4 also enjoyed strong sales with over 1 million units sold each.
Unfortunately, those three games are the only million sellers this year (though Pokémon Scarlet and Violet came very close to reaching that milestone!). That’s quite the difference from last year, where three games sold over 2 million units. Famitsu cites the rise of digital sales (and Free 2 Play titles) to (partially) explain that drop.

For the 7th year in a row, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in Japan. Sales took a big hit, but still remain above 4 million units: a remarkable feat for such an aging console (already its 7th year on the market!).

In 2023, Hardware sales increased noticeably (127.5% Year on Year) thanks to the PlayStation 5. This was the 4th consecutive year of growth for Hardware, which reached its highest point in the past decade. Meanwhile, Software sales were down (82.6%).
Overall, the market is slightly up with 107.8% Year on Year.
