Investor Briefing (Oct. 2016) – Kimishima talks about amiibo and Download sales

During the usual meeting with investors, which always follows the presentation of the latest financial results, Nintendo talked about amiibo and Download sales. As seen yesterday, both segments were down Year on Year during the first half of Fiscal Year 2016-2017.

Between April and September 2016, Nintendo sold a total of 3.8 million figure-type amiibo to retailers. In comparison, Nintendo sold 3 times more during the same period in 2015, with a total of 10.6 million units. Then again, looking at the graph below, one immediately understands why: Nintendo also released a lot less amiibo (and compatible games).

amiiboAs for Download sales, there’s some good and bad news. The good news? More and more players are buying the digital version of games already available at retail. The bad news? Overall download sales are down, as you can see on the graph below:

Download salesFor Tatsumi Kimishima, there are two main reasons Download sales are down:

  • Wii U sales were down;
  • less Downloadable Content was released (last year, there was DLC for Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS).

As a result, sales dropped to 14.7 billion Yen for the first half of Fiscal Year 2016-17, but they remain stronger than they were during the same period in 2014.
