Fire Emblem: Three Houses – Details about the Cindered Shadows side story

Nintendo have shared some more details about the Cindered Shadows side story, the latest and last bit of DLC for Fire Emblem: Three Houses. We learn that the story begins when the protagonist, along with the three House Leaders (Dimitri, Claude, and Edelgard) and some students ends up in a mysterious placed located beneath the Garreg Mach Monastery. They were following a suspicious individual spotted at the Officers Academy.

There, they find a mysterious “town” referred to as “Abyss”, which has been the topic of various rumours among the students of the Academy. Abyss is the place where those who cannot dwell on the surface ends up, forced to live hidden from everyone. It looks like, for some reason, the Church of Seiros has been aware of the existence of Abyss all along.

In the Abyss, the protagonist ends up meeting students that claim to belong to the Ashen Wolves, the mysterious 4th House. They all used to attend the Officers Academy, but ended up in the Abyss for one reason or another.

Here’s the characters introduced in this side-story for Fire Emblem: Three Houses:

  • Yuri (voiced by Junya Enoki)
  • Constance (voiced by Bridcutt Sarah Emi)
  • Balthus (voiced by Subaru Kimura)
  • Hapi (voiced by Sachika Misawa)

Unfortunately, a mysterious intruder is threatening the peace of the Abyss, and it’s up to the protagonist and the students of the Ashen Wolves to protect the vulnerable people who live there.

Now, you’re probably wondering how does Cindered Shadows work: do you first need to clear the game to access it? Can you transfer anything from the main story to the side-story? The answer is… no. Cindered Shadows is a truly independent Story mode, with separate save data files. When you start playing, you start by choosing the appearance and the name of the protagonist, then the difficulty level (Normal, Hard), and then the Mode (Classic, Casual)… just like in the main story.

In the main story, the month was dedicated to teaching students and various activities around and outside Garreg Mach Monastery, with an assigment (a mission) at the end of the month. But in Cindered Shadows, the game cycle is different, but Nintendo do not share more details about that.

Also, you will not be able to scout students from other classes this time around, and you will get to play with fixed party members. If you play in Classic Mode and do not reset after losing a unit in battle, you will not be able to replace them!

Finally, Nintendo mention that the battle maps feature various special gimmicks, and the overall difficulty level of battles is said to be slightly higher than those of the main story.
