Fire Emblem Echoes: new trailer, Limited Editions revealed, amiibo features further detailed

Last week, we got plenty of new details for Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia courtesy of the official website and Famitsu magazine. And it looks like it’s just the beginning: a brand new trailer was uploaded today, showcasing the various elements detailed last week. You can check it out below!

But first, a major announcement for fans in North America. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is getting a Limited Edition, that costs $59.99, and includes the following:

  • a physical copy of the game
  • a hardcover Valentia Artbook
  • a Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia Sound Selection CD
  • a Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia Pin Set (Celica, Alm, Marth)
  • a reversible cover sheet, that looks like the packaging of Fire Emblem Gaiden

Here’s what this Limited Edition looks like:

Europe will get a similar Limited Edition, that also includes the Alm and Celica amiibo:

In Australia, the Limited Edition includes the same goodies as in North America:

In North America, the Alm and Celica amiibo are not included in this bundle, but will be available separately as part of a dual-pack sold $24.99. The press release from Nintendo confirms that each amiibo unlocks a specific dungeon, which allows players to earn items and level up their armies by defeating bosses.

But there’s more: the Alm and Celica amiibo can also be used in battle, by selecting Mila’s Turnwheel from the menu on the overworld map. You can sacrifice a portion of Alm or Celica’s health in order to summon an illusory hero (controlled by the CPU), which will act as a temporary ally for one, single turn. And as explained last time, Alm and Celica’s stats can be saved on their respective amiibo, which makes the summoned unit stronger.

You can also summon an illusory hero using the Fire Emblem amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series (Marth, Ike, Roy, Robin, Lucina, and Corrin). As for the non-Fire Emblem amiibo, they are used to summon additional monsters to the battleground in order to assist players in battle.

By the way, Mila’s Turnwheel is the English name of Mila’s Gear, mentioned in Famitsu magazine last week. Besides the amiibo feature, it can be used to rewind the player’s last few turns, allowing you to undo tactical errors.

Next, here’s the latest trailer for Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia on Nintendo 3DS:

The trailer starts with a recap of the story, but doesn’t reveal anything that wasn’t previously known (click here for more details about the story). As explained previously, you can chose to play with either Alm and Celica, and you can do so in parallel. Each “route” allows you to play with different characters.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia also features new recruitable heroes, new villains to defeat, and a new prologue that explores the previously hidden history of Alm and Celica.

In the game, you have the overworld map, which can be freely explored. You can chose to head into town, where you can do the following

  • talk to villagers
  • examine areas in order to find items
  • move to another area
  • save the game

One of the most iconic elements of Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is the dungeons, that you can explore in full 3D (with a third-person view). In the trailer, we can see Celica use a fire spell in order to find her way, and hit enemies with a pre-emptive strike. Hitting enemies with such a strike will have them begin the battle with less health than normal.

As for the battle system, fans of the series will not be disoriented, as the game uses the same grid-based battle system the Fire Emblem series is known for. Here’s some major points to keep in mind:

  • archers can now attack enemies located in adjacent spaces, and have a longer reach. They can also counter;
  • there may not be a weapon triangle like in other Fire Emblem titles, certain weapon types do deal more damage to specific units;
  • you have to keep in mind the effects of terrain (lowered accuracy, etc.). Magic spells ignore terrain effects, but the caster loses some HP with each use.

Finally, the trailer mentions how you can promote characters and change their class at Mila’s Statues (found inside dungeons, alongside Sacred Springs which grant heroes with permanent stat increases), and how you can chose between Casual and Classic mode.

Inside each dungeon is a Mila’s Statue, which can be used to promote characters and change their class, while some contain Sacred Springs, which can grant heroes with permanent stat increases.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (3DS) comes out on April 20th in Japan, and May 19th in Europe and North America. The Upcoming Releases page has been updated with the Limited Edition for North America.
