Fire Emblem Echoes: more details on Mila’s Gear, new character, more

Yesterday, Nintendo finally opened the full website for Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia in Japan, revealing plenty of details about the game, but also some gameplay footage, and even some soundtrack samples. Click here to check it out!

And as announced on Tuesday, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is also showcased in Famitsu magazine this week, and it provides us with even more details about the game (ocne again translated by the good folks over at Serenes Forest). Let’s start with one of the new features of the game: Mila’s Gear, a pretty useful tool that lets you rewind the actions of units, though only one at a time.

As you can see on the scans below, there’s a gear icon at the bottom of the screen, with a number inside. This is related to Mila’s Gear, though it’s not clear what the number represents: is the number of turn you can unwind using the tool, or the number of remaining uses?

Next, here’s some details about one of the two new characters:

  • Berkut (voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki): he’s the nephew of the Rigel Emperor, who really values his social standing. He’s the one who convinced Desaix to launch his coup d’état. He wants to become the next emperor, and so he commands the invasion of the Zofia Kingdom in order to prove his military prowess.

Famitsu also shares some additional details about the reason Celica sets off on a journey. She does so because of mysterious happenings: poor harvest, increased sightings of Terrors (monsters), etc.. But it’s only after having an ominous dream about Alm, her childhood friend, that she realises something is wrong, and decides to head to the Temple of Mila in order to get some answers.

Just like in other Fire Emblem games, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia lets you change the class of a character when they reach a certain level. This increases their stats. But there’s a major difference: you don’t need any item, you simply need to visit a Mila statue.

Most classes can only change into a specific class, but there’s an exception: Villagers, who can change into many classes. Here’s two examples:

  • Villager > Cavalier, Soldier, Mercenary, Archer, or Mage
  • Mage > Sage (male) or Priestess (female)

Finally, here’s some of the classes you can find in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia:

  • Villager: they have poor combat abilities, that they compensate with a lot of potential. They use swords;
  • Cavalier: mounted knights who can cover long distances, but have trouble with tricky terrain. They use lances;
  • Soldier: a foot-soldier with balanced stats, but pretty average. They use lances;
  • Mercenary: they have amazing speed and skills, and a higher critical rate than other classes. They use swords;
  • Archer: they use bows to attack enemies from a distance, but they can now defend themselves in close quarters, too;
  • Cleric: they focus on healing and White Magic to support other units. Combat really isn’t their forte, and putting them on the frontline is a pretty bad idea;
  • Mage: they use Black Magic, which can hit enemies from a distance while nullifying terrain effects;
  • Knight (promoted Soldier): their heavy armour provides great defense, but really slows them down, limiting their movements considerably;
  • Priestess (promoted female Mage): they can use swords and both Black and White Magic.

Here’s the scans from Famitsu magazine:

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (3DS) comes out on April 20th in Japan, and May 19th in Europe and North America.
