Fantasy Life: over 1 million units shipped worldwide

Fantasy LifeDeveloped by Brownie Brown (now known as 1-Up Studio), Fantasy Life is a unique RPG mixing elements from Animal Crossing and Rune Factory, in a very Level-5-like world. It was released back in December 2012 in Japan, and was followed by Fantasy Life Link! (an expansion) in July 2013.  The European and North American release was in September and October 2014 respectively.

According to Famitsu, in Japan, the two “versions” of the game have sold at least:

  • original game: 275,620 units at retail (Media Create)
  • expansion: 104 977 units at retail (Media Create)

And thanks to the official website for Fantasy Life 2 (the “sequel”, for mobile platforms), we learn that shipments for the original Fantasy Life have topped 1 million units worldwide (retail + digital). Level-5 doesn’t specify it, but we can assume that number includes the Fantasy Life Link! expansion.

Based on the sales data for Japan, we can calculate that Fantasy Life shipments for Europe and North America top 600 000 units. Obviously, that number isn’t exact, as Media Create data only go up to December 2014. Still, it allows us to see that the game was quite popular outside Japan, though it definitely wasn’t Level-5 most successful game in those regions.
