Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2: details (story, gameplay systems) and screenshots

As promised, Capcom revealed some new details about Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Kakugo. There’s some details about the story, the gameplay system, and more. But first, let’s start with those from Famitsu magazine.

To the surprise of no one, Shu Takumi is directing once again, but this time around, Motohide Eshiro is the producer (which makes us wonder what happened to Shintaro Kojima, who is currently working on Monster Hunter XX). Development is said to be 35% complete, which confirms the game will not be released any time soon.

Next, here’s the official synopsis for the story:

The end of the 19th century. The last and greatest World’s Fair of the 19th century is due to open in the English capital, London. But beneath the surface of this symbol of industry, a shadowy web of connections beckons another case. A tremendous story linking Japan and England once again begins to move. The curtain rises on the second act of Ryuunosuke Naruhodou’s grand courtroom drama!

Capcom confirms that the game will once again takes place in both England and Japan. Mysteries from the first entry will finally be resolved, but there will also be some new plot threads.

The main characters are the same:

  • Naruhodou Ryuunosuke: Naruhodou Ryuuichi / Phoenix Wright’s ancestor). In the first entry, he traveled all the way to England in order to become a lawyer (following a certain incident). That’s where he met Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective. In this sequel, he receives a letter from Mikotoba Susato, one day, and that very letter sets into motion a certain case.
  • Sherlock Holmes: the famous detective);
  • Mikotoba Susato: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke’s assistant. Due to a certain case, she travels back to Japan, but she can’t help but worry about Ryuunosuke. That’s what the scene from the first trailer, with Susato putting a flower on a grave, is about.
  • Iris Watson: a genius child, who is only 10 year but also has a PhD and has even written a book.

Some of the screenshots below show a rather dingy-looking apartment, which is apparently connected to one of the new cases (it’s the infamous “cursed boarding house room” Famitsu was mentioning in its preview). The wig on the floor and the theater props imply it could belong to the blonde-wigged actor that makes an appearance in case 4 of the original game.

As far as a gameplay systems, fans of the Ace Attorney series will not be disoriented as they mostly remain unchanged. A typical case goes like this:

  • you go to the crime scene and places related to the crime in order to investigate and find clues, but also gather testimonies from witnesses;
  • you then go to court and use the clues / testimonies gathered during your investigation to find the truth and get a Not Guilty verdict for your client.

During the investigation parts, you have access to the usual commands on the bottom screen (who work in the exact same way as all the other Ace Attorney games):

  • Examine
  • Move
  • Talk
  • Present

Next, we have the returning gameplay systems from Dai Gyakuten Saiban, which work the same way in Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2:

  • Joint Reasoning: during investigation part, Sherlock Holmes and Naruhodou Ryuunosuke join force in order to reach the truth. Sherlock Holmes starts his reasoning, while Naruhodou Ryuunosuke comes and points out inconsistencies;
  • Jury Battle: during the court parts, you have to convince not just the judge, but also the jury. That’s where the Jury Battles kick in, and you need to win for your client to get a Not Guilty verdict.

Finally, here’s some art and various screenshots for the game:
