Attack on Titan 2 (3DS): details on side stories, World Mode, Titan creation more

As mentioned several times before, Attack on Titan 2 ~Mirai no Zahyou~ features a Story Mode that follows the event of the second season of the anime series. It features actual scenes from that anime, complete with voice acting and soundtrack.

There’s three main chapters:

  • Mirai no Zahyou (Future’s Coordinates) chapter
  • Reiner * Annie * Bertolt chapter
  • Ymir * Krista chapter

There’s also (at least) two side-stories:

  • Ilse’s Notebook: a story about Ilse Langnar, a member of the Survey Corps who finds herself in a desperate situation (she got separated from her team and her horse, and ends up encountering a mysterious Titan. It’s based on the special chapter from the manga, that got an OVA adaptation)
  • A Choice Without Regret: a chapter about Levi, who reveals the circumstances that led his and his team’s joining the survey corps. You will need save data from either version of Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains in order to unlock this chapter.

Speaking of Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains, if you didn’t play it, there’s nothing to worry about: Attack on Titan 2 ~Mirai no Zahyou~ features a recap of the events of that game. There’s also a “Reiner * Annie Chapter”, with the story of the original game told from their point of view, allowing even players who played the original to enjoy it.

Besides the Story Mode, Attack on Titan 2 ~Mirai no Zahyou~ also features the “World Mode”, where you can create your very own character, order troops around, and tackle various missions.

Your original character can be hired as an Elite Soldier, provided they meet the right criteria. Elite Soldiers can get experience and level up through missions, which means you can keep using them in the long term. They can also learn special skills thanks to training missions.

You can also take part in Expedition Missions, where you need to tackle several missions in a row. The thing is, you cannot change equipment or team members during the missions, so you really need to prepare adequately before heading out. You can earn more rewards than usual with particularly tough missions.

Quite interestingly, the game lets you create your very own Titan, once you’ve progressed far enough in World Mode. Once the Titan Research Laboratory has been set up in your headquarters, you can create your Titan using various body parts and elements: face, hairstyle, physique, skills, and more. You get those parts by taking down Titans during missions.

Finally, Spike-Chunsoft mentions improvements made to the vertical maneuvering equipment, such as the ability to slide on the ground, do reverse horizontal slahes, or do high-speed dash slashes. The UI has also been improved, and the developers made it easier to hit Titan with the right timing for critical hits.

Here’s the latest batch of screenshots for the game:
