Animal Crossing: New Leaf – amiibo support and new content this Fall (inc. Splatoon)

Update: Nintendo of Europe and Nintendo of America confirmed that, just like Japan, Europe and North America would get the update this Fall.

Today, Nintendo made a surprise announcement regarding Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The game is getting a free update this Fall, basically four years after its release in Japan. This new update will add two things:

  • new content
  • amiibo support

Nintendo specifies that all Animal Crossing amiibo will be compatible, and that includes the 400 Animal Crossing amiibo cards. When you scan an amiibo, the corresponding villager show up in your village, and will sometime move there (which is not something you can control usually), a bit like in Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer.

It looks like there will also be collaborations with other series, including Splatoon. On one of the screenshots below, we can see two villagers cosplaying as Marie and Callie. Right now, it’s not clear which series will get a collaborations, or if it’s just going to be Splatoon.

As for the new content, it does seem to be tied to amiibo. More details will be announced at a later date, so we will know exactly all it works then. Right now, the update is only announced for Japan, but there’s no doubt Europe and North America will also get it (and most likely at the same time).

In the mean time, here’s some screenshots and screencaps:
