Japan: more sales data for Week 50 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 50)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that total Software sales topped 1 364 000 units during Week 50, which is 78.78% of Week 49 sales. That noticeable drop in sales is the aftermath of the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, though it could have been much worse if not for the holiday season.

Speaking of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it sold 407 000 additional units during Week 50, and so was the best-selling game in Japan for the second week in a row despite several popular releases.

Hardware-wise, sales are slightly up due to increased demand caused by the holiday season. A total of 387 000 units were sold, which is 103.74% of Week 49 sales

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 51)

This week, we have the Day-1 sell-through for quite a lot of games:

  • [NSW] Dragon Quest Builders 2 (Square Enix) – 30%. A bit on the low end; it looks like retailers may have ordered too many copies (probably because of the holiday season). Hopefully for Square-Enix, sales should improve during the weekend… The Nintendo Switch version sold more, but it’s not clear by how many units just yet;
  • [NSW] Onimusha: Warlords (Capcom) – 30%. Sales seem to be on the low end, especially as they’re bound to be concentrated on the first few days. Nintendo Switch version sold less, and has a worst Day-1 sell-through ratio (50% for PlayStation 4 version);
  • [NSW] Kunio-Kun: The World Classics Collection (Arc System Works) – 30%. Lowish sell-through, but not unexpected for this kind of collection. PlayStation 4 version sold more, but sell-through is the same;
  • [NSW] Battle Princess Madelyn (3goo). Terrible debut, despite the low price. Nintendo Switch version sold more;
  • [NSW] Fitness Boxing (Imagineer). Another terrible debut. It looks like there isn’t much of a market for ports of Wii games on Nintendo Switch… at least, not casual ones like this and Little Pets -Dogs & Cats-!
  • [NSW] Funghi Puzzle: Funghi Explosion (D3Publisher). Another game with a terrible debut despite the budget pricepoint;
  • [NSW] Katamari Damacy Reroll (Bandai Namco Games). Not releasing the same week as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (unlike Europe and North America) doesn’t seem to have helped one bit. Another terrible debut this week.

Dengeki (Week 50)

Dengeki report that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold about 430 000 units during its second week on the market, which brings the total to 1 664 000 units. In other words, it reached 1.5 million untis in barely 10 days, and it will reach 2 million units within the first 3 weeks. Talk about an impressive performance!

What’s more, the drop compared to the second week was better than for previous entries in the series:

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: 65.2%
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl: 69.8% (ended up selling over 2 million units)
  • Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS: 67.6%

With that in mind, Dengeki expect sales to remain strong for the time being. It’s certainly true that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has the potential to become the best-selling game in the series: in fact, it’s more a question of when, rather than if!

As for the other holiday titles on Nintendo Switch, they’re also enjoying strong sales:

  • Super Mario Party sold 81 additional units, bringing the total to 547 000 units
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! sold about 98 000 units this week, bringing the total since launch to 1 056 000 units. It reached 1 million units sold within the 5th week.

This week, Software sales dropped by 31.8%, to 1 270 000 units, due the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate the previous week. Hardware-wise, sales actually increased by 11.4% to 418 000 units, thanks to the holiday season. The Nintendo Switch is dominating sales by a wide margin: it actually sold over 300 000 units this week alone, for the first time since launch.
