Japan: Famitsu sales for July 2018

Yesterday, Famitsu shared its monthly report on video games sales in Japan, which covers July (June 25th to July 29th to be precise, so 5 weeks).

As reported by Dengeki last week, the Top 5 Software is only made of Nintendo Switch games. Famitsu reports that it’s actually the Top 8 spots that Nintendo’s console managed to grab, not just the Top 5. The best-seller was Octopath Traveler, with 142 033 units. Without shortages, the game would probably have reached 200 000 units. The other entry in the Top 5 is Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun, with 96 637 units.

Splatoon 2 reached 2.5 million units sold in July, and is still selling extremely well more than a year after its release. As for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s not done selling either: it sold 42 000 units in July alone, which brought the total on Nintendo Switch alone to 1 million. It’s now become the 4th million-seller on Nintendo Switch!

For August, the key titles are going to be Etrian Odyssey X and Pro Yakyuu Famista Evolution.

Here’s the Top 5 Software from Famitsu, for July 2018:

01./00. [NSW] Octopath Traveler <RPG> (Square Enix) {2018.07.13} (¥6.800) – 142.033 / NEW
02./01. [NSW] Mario Tennis Aces <SPT> (Nintendo) {2018.06.22} (¥5.980) – 141.867 / 263.937 (+16%)
03./03. [NSW] Splatoon 2 # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2017.07.21} (¥5.980) – 123.344 / 2.506.738 (+75%)
04./04. [NSW] Minecraft <ADV> (Microsoft Game Studios) {2018.06.21} (¥3.600) – 103.131 / 169.181 (+56%)
05./00. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2018.07.19} (¥6.100) – 96.637 / NEW

Once again, Nintendo games dominated sales, with 670 000 units sold: that’s more than the second and third most successful publishers combined. Mario Tennis Aces and Splatoon 2 sold over 260 000 units combined, which means that more than half of total sales for the company comes from games outside the Top 5 (which includes many evergreen titles). Meanwhile, for Square-Enix and Bandai-Namco, their respective game in the Top 5 account for the majority of sales in July.

Here’s the Top 3 Publishers from Famitsu, for July 2018:

Nintendo – 670.000
Square Enix – 201.000
Bandai Namco Games – 168.000

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch ended up selling 242 733 units, and was the best-selling console in Japan for the 5th month in a row. Sales noticeably increased in July, with +68 000 units (x1.5) compared to June (which wasn’t the most exciting of months for the platforms… or any other platform in Japan, for that matter).

The Nintendo 3DS also saw an increase in sales, to 41 639 units (+13 000 units), but said sales remain quite low (not surprising for such an old console). It doesn’t look like the Summer holidays are going to have any sort of meaningful impact on the Nintendo 3DS, which is slowly but surely on its way to retirement.
