[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 50, 2017 (December 11th – December 17th) [Top 50]

Media Create

Overall, Week 50 was a pretty busy week for the Japanese market, though it’s not so much thanks to the new releases that made their way in to the Top 20 from Media Create than the usual holiday boost.

The top release of the week is Yo-kai Watch Busters 2: Hihou Densetsu Banbarayaa – Sword / Magnum, that’s off to a decent debut with 208 540 units sold. As expected, it’s a massive drop compared to the first game (released when Yo-kai Watch was at the peak of its popularity), that sold 688 836 units at launch.

In comparison, Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 had a pretty disappointing debut, but it could have been far worse. The real problem isn’t really the first week sales, but total sales: the first Yo-kai Watch Busters game ended up selling over 2.2 million units, and it doesn’t look likely Yo-kai Watch Busters will even get to 1 million units. It will need strong second week sales, and steady ones throughout 2018, for that to happen.

The other entry on Nintendo platforms in the Top 20 from Media Create is Harvest Moon: A Tale of Two Towns+, which sold 15 612 units at launch. It’s definitely not the best debut for the series, but considering it’s just a very late release of the Nintendo 3DS version of the game (originally released on Nintendo DS), it’s a somewhat respectable performance.

Week 50 isn’t the biggest year of the week for video games sales (that’s Week 51), but it’s still a pretty busy one, what with the holiday season in full swing. You can see it clearly with the various Nintendo games in the Top 20 from Media Create, that all saw a significant increase in sales.

Let’s start with Super Mario Odyssey, which sold 133 180 units this week (+39%). As reported by Famitsu earlier today, the game has now sold over 1 million units in Japan alone, and that’s not counting digital sales. Given the current sales trajectory, it’s possible it will reach 1.5 million units sometime in January.

Meanwhile, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon keeps selling pretty well, and is closing in to 2 million units:

  • stand-alone: 119 005 units this week (+12%), 1 169 173 units since launch
  • dual pack: 12 117 units this week (+8%) / 24 234 units if counted as two units, 302 266 units since launch / 604 532 units if counted as two units
  • combined: 131 122 units this week / 143 239 units if dual-pack is counted as two units, 1 471 439 units since launch / 1 773 705 units if dual-pack is counted as two units

2 million units is definitely a lock for this game, the question is when it will reach that milestone. January 2018 is the safest bet, but depending on Week 51 sales, it could very well be this year. For that to happen, it would need to sell an average of 113 147 units during the next two weeks, which is going to be hard during Week 52.

Splatoon 2 is also headed towards 2 million units, but it’s definitely going to take much longer for it to reach that milestone. This week, it sold 70 489 units (+39%), which brings it to over 1.5 million units (1 530 859 units to be precise). A strong performance was expected during the holiday season, which bodes well for Christmas week… will it reach 100 000 units during that week?

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it looks like it’s going to become the third million-seller on Nintendo Switch as early as next week. Indeed, Week 51 is the biggest week of the year for video game sales, and early signs point towards significant Nintendo Switch shipments, so it’s highly unlikely it will sell less than 55 000 units during that week… not when it sold 50 679 units this week (+52%)! It’s currently sitting at 945 232 units sold at retail.

If you were worried about Kirby following the rather meek debut of Kirby: Battle Royale, you can safely get rid of your worries. Its sales increased by 30%, thanks to the holiday boost, with 25 810 units sold. Its total is now at 72 528 units, which means sales will top 100 000 units as early as next week. It looks like Life to Date sales should end at (or pretty close to) 200 000 units.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

  • 11./10. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 19.469 / 702.460 (+36%). Now that it’s sold over 700 000 units on Nintendo Switch alone, there’s really no doubt it will manage to sell over 1 million units even without taking sales of the Wii U version into account;
  • 14./15. [3DS] Style Savvy: Styling Star (Nintendo) – 13.532 / 84.236 (+40%). As expected, holiday sales for that particular title are fairly good, though it will not be nearly enough to catch up with previous entries;
  • 16./08. [NSW] Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Nintendo) – 12.017 / 129.426 (-39%). A surprisingly “soft” drop in sales this week, which bodes pretty well for sales in the long run;
  • 17./12. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 12.007 / 318.524 (+1%). A surprisingly soft increase in sales this week, which isn’t all that surprising after several weeks of continued increases;
  • 18./17. [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Pokemon Co.) – 11.144 / 150.782 (+33%). Holiday boost also has a positive impact on the sales of that game, not just Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. There’s little doubt it will reach 200 000 units in a couple of months (maybe in January if sales during Christmas week are strong enough);
  • 19./21. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo) – 10.714 / 272.206. It finally makes its comeback in the Top 20 from Media Create, and it’s now pretty close to 300 000 units;
  • 20./22. [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi: Koko, Dokonan Desu? (Nippon Columbia) – 10.072 / 92.586. The Nintendo Switch game dropped from the Top 20 from Media Create this week, but the latest Nintendo 3DS came to take its place. 100 000 units will be reached next week, which shows that it’s selling pretty much in line with the previous entry on the handheld.

Media Create – Hardware

This week saw another significant increase in Nintendo Switch shipments, with +60 000 units in a week… though Media Create did report lower sales for Week 49, compared to Famitsu. That’s pretty good news for people looking to buy the console, but still nowhere near the required level to meet demand.

Early signs point towards a massive increase in shipments for Christmas week, and it will be interesting to see if the Nintendo Switch can top 300 000 units during that week. Obviously, the real question isn’t whether the console can sell that much, but whether Nintendo will be able to ship that many units to retailers.

It will also be interesting to see what happens during the following weeks: will Nintendo choose to ship as much as they can for Christmas, and “sacrifice” late-December and early-January sales as a result? Whatever happens, interest in the console certainly isn’t going to die down any time soon… shortages either!

This week, the Nintendo Switch sold 221 210 units, which means it will reach 3 million units next week (total sales are currently sitting at 2 908 416 units).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its holiday sales are quite disappointing, though it was to be expected with how old it is, and how popular the Nintendo Switch is. Sales topped 45 000 units this week, which means the handheld sold 3 times better last year (over 133 000 units). A significant drop that shows even 100 000 units during Christmas week is going to be hard to reach.

Of course, there will be a further increase in sales for Christmas week, but it will be nowhere near as significant as the one for the same week in 2016. It clearly is the end of the line for may well be the very last dedicated handheld from Nintendo.

Finally, the Wii U sold 75 units this week.
