Zelda Tri Force Heroes: Aonuma explains why the game is playable online

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force HeroesWhen Nintendo revealed The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, the company made it pretty clear that the game would be playable online, and not just via local wireless. In an interview published on 4Gamer.net last week, Eiji Aonuma (Producer of The Legend of Zelda series) explains why the game is playable online.

It turns out that The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, released on DSiWare (Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS) for the 25th Anniversary of the series, is one of the reasons The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes is playable online. Indeed, when it was released, many players complained about the lack of online in the Club Nintendo survey, which led the developers to make sure it didn’t happen with Tri Force Heroes.

In the interview, Hiromasa Shikata (Director) explains that when you play online, you can chose to either play with registered friends (from your friend list), or with random players. If you play with just one friend, a random player will join as the third Link, which is great news if you want to play with friends, but with only one of them available.

Playing with other people via local wireless will allow you to collect “Proofs of Friendship”, some sort of tokens you can only get from other players via Local or Download Play. Those “Proofs of Friendship” are apparently required to craft a special costume at Madame Couture’s, though we don’t know anything else about it right now.

For Eiji Aonuma, it might be difficult for adults to get together with their friends to play video games, but he hopes players will try to do it anyway, in order to get those precious Proofs of Friendship (which cannot be obtained via Solo Play or Online Play). They were added to the game for that reason: to try and get friends to meet and play the game together.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (3DS) comes out on October 22nd in Japan, and October 23rd in Europe and North America.
