Wii: online services for GoldenEye 007 to be discontinued in March

Back in May 2014, Nintendo discontinued its Nintendo Wifi Connection service, which means the vast majority of Wii (and Nintendo DS) games saw their online services (online play, other network-related features) terminated for good. However, not all games were impacted, and some were “spared”: those with paid online for example. And GoldenEye 007 is one of the few games with online services still running.

Unfortunately, it’s the end of the line for that game, too. Today, Nintendo sent a press release to notify players about the discontinuation of online services for GoldenEye 007 on Wii. After March 30th (10AM JST / 3AM CET / 2AM GMT) / March 29th (9PM ET / 6PM PT), you will no longer be able to use any of the online services of the game.

Since it’s now been more than 7 years since release, it’s no wonder online services are being discontinued… if anything, it makes you wonder how on earth they managed to stay up for so long. After all, it’s unlikely there is still a sizeable playerbase for the game.

For those who never heard of GoldenEye 007, it’s a remake/reimagining of GoldenEye 007, originally released on the Nintendo 64. It was released on Wii back in 2010, though Japan didn’t get it until June 2011.
