The Super Mario Bros. Movie grosses over 9 billion Yen in Japan with nearly 6.5 million tickets sold

Another week, another press release from Toho sharing some details about the performance of the Super Mario Bros. Movie in Japan! According to them, the movie grossed 742,808,730 Yen / $5,383,781 during its 4th week-end (May 19th to May 21st), down from 1,068,263,970 Yen / $7,868,736 during the previous weekend.

This brings total sales to 9,140,356,590 Yen / $66,248,116 since launch, back on April 28th. Given the current sales trajectory, the 10 billion milestone should be reached in early June. Since launch, no less than 6,432,580 people have gone to see the movie in Japan.

Here’s how The Super Mario Bros. Movie fared compared to two of Universal movies in Japan:

  • Despicable Me 3 (7.312 billion Yen in total)
    • The Super Mario Bros. Movie: 213.4% of Despicable 3’s sales during the first 24 days
  • Jurassic World: Fallen King (8.080 billion Yen in total)
    • The Super Mario Bros. Movie: 157.6% of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s sales during the first 24 days
