The Super Mario Bros. Movie grosses over 8 billion Yen in Japan with over 5.5 million tickets sold

Weeks go by, and yet the top of the Japanese box office simply won’t change. For the third weekend in a row, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the #1 movie in Japan with 1,068,263,970 Yen / $7,868,736 grossed between May 12th and May 14th according to Toho (Japanese distributor).

To this day, the Super Mario Bros. Movie has brought no less than 5,692,081 people to theatres in Japan. The movie has grossed a whopping 8,046,790,210 Yen / $59,271,932 since launch in Japan, and it looks like it has a shot at reaching 10 billion Yen before the end of the month.

With over 8 billion Yen grossed in just 17 days, the Super Mario Bros. Movie is still the fastest-selling movie of the year in Japan. It also grabbed a couple more records: it’s now the most popular Illumination movie ever in Japan and worldwide, surpassing the cumulative sales of all other movies (in Japan, the previous record was Despicable Me 3 with 7.312 billion Yen).

Here’s how The Super Mario Bros. Movie fared compared to two of Universal movies in Japan:

  • Despicable Me 3 (7.312 billion Yen in total)
    • The Super Mario Bros. Movie: 218.8% of Despicable 3’s sales during the 3rd weekend, and 259.1% of Despicable 3’s sales during the first 17 days
  • Jurassic World: Fallen King (8.080 billion Yen in total)
    • The Super Mario Bros. Movie: 141.3% of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s sales during the 3rd weekend, and 163.4% of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s sales during the first 17 days
