The Super Mario Bros. Movie grosses over 10 billion Yen in Japan with over 7 million tickets sold

Another week, another press release from Toho sharing some details about the performance of the Super Mario Bros. Movie in Japan! According to the company (who distributes it in that country), the movie grossed 632,101,690 Yen / $4,492,985 during its 5th week-end (May 26th to May 28th), down from 742,808,730 Yen / $5,383,781 during the previous weekend (a more modest drop than during the 4th weekend).

And as of last week, the Super Mario Bros. Movie has now grossed over 10 billion Yen in Japan (10,057,858,799 Yen to be precise, so about $71,491,361), with 7,057,469 tickets sold to date. A fairly impressive milestone it was able to reach in just 31 days! Toho also points out that the movie broke another record: it’s now the fastest anime movie from the West to reach 10 billion Yen in sales.

Here’s how The Super Mario Bros. Movie fared compared to three of Toho movies in Japan:

  • Top Gun: Maverick (13.7 billion Yen in total) took 65 days to reach 10 billion Yen
  • Despicable Me 3 (7.312 billion Yen in total)
    • The Super Mario Bros. Movie: 180.9% of Despicable 3’s sales during the first 31 days
  • Jurassic World: Fallen King (8.080 billion Yen in total)
    • The Super Mario Bros. Movie: 154.9% of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s sales during the first 31 days
