Super Mario Odyssey: over 2 million units sold during the first 3 days

Super Mario Odyssey was released last week worldwide, and it’s pretty safe to say it was one of the most highly-anticipated titles this year. It received many awards at events like E3 or gamescom, and players’ expectations for this game were pretty high. And looking at reviews, and comments on social media, it looks like the game was able to meet those lofty expectations.

And this seems to have translated into fantastic sales: during the Nintendo Investor Briefing, earlier today, Tatsumi Kimishima revealed that Super Mario Odyssey sold over 2 million units during the first 3 days. That number includes Hardware bundles, but also digital sales (Nintendo eShop). What’s more, those are units sold to actual players, not just units shipped to retailers.

The Nintendo Switch has sold over 7 million units since launch, which means that between 1/3 and 1/4 of current owners ended up buying Super Mario Odyssey: a pretty positive result!

What’s more, the holiday season is upon us, and with the increase in Nintendo Switch shipments, Nintendo is going to increase the number of people interested in Super Mario Odyssey. The goal is to turn it into an ever-green title, that will be able to keep selling well beyond the holiday season.

Nintendo believes that releasing this game in the current climate, with steady buzz surrounding the Nintendo Switch (which is enjoying high usage rates, as mentioned in this post, is going to give them a big edge heading into the holiday season.
