Last week, during the “Gotta Go Fast: The Official Sonic the Hedgehog Panel” panel at SXSW, SEGA made several announcements regarding the Sonic series. One of them is for Sonic Mania Plus, an enhanced version of the 2017 game, releasing at retail!

Sonic Mania Plus

Presented as the “definitive” version of Sonic Mania, Sonic Mania Plus offers brand new features and content, and will be released at retail. Here’s what has been added to the game:

  • two new playable characters (Mighty the Armadillo, Ray the Flying Squirrel)
  • an Encore mode (new look to familiar locations)
  • physical release, with 32 page artbook, reversible SEGA Genesis (North America) / Mega Drive (Europe) cover, and holographic packaging

Here’s what the contents of the retail edition looks like:

Sonic Mania Plus will be released this Summer in Europe and North America, and will cost $29.99. If you already own the game and would like to get the additional content, it will be sold as an Encore DLC Pack on the Nintendo eShop. More details will be shared soon.

Sonic Mania Plus (Switch) and the Sonic Mania: Encore DLC Pack (Swtich – eShop) come out this Summer in Europe and North America. The Upcoming Games page has been updated!

Sonic Racing

During the panel, a new Sonic Racing game was teased. We don’t know what’s it’s called, on which platforms it will be released (though the Nintendo Switch is a likely candidate), or when it will be available.

We do have a teaser trailer, at least:

Sonic Mania Adventures

Sonic Mania Adventures is a new 2D animated series, featuring elements from the Sonic Mania universe. It’s animated by Tyson Hesse, who created the opening animation of Sonic Mania. The first episode will be available on YouTube next month.

Here’s a teaser trailer and some concept-art:

Sonic the Hedgehog comics by IDW

The first issue of the Sonic the Hedgehog comics by IDW will be released on April 4th, in the United States. All four issues can now be pre-ordered on the SEGA Shop in a special bundle including both the physical and digital editions, but also an exclisive variant of Issue #4, and an exclusive mystery t-shirt. Unfortunately, that bundle is only available in the United States…
