Pokémon GO: dynamic weather and Gen. 3 Pokémon coming this week

It’s time for the next major Pokémon GO update! Today, Niantic announced that two pretty important things were coming to Pokémon GO later this week:

  • Pokémon from Gen. 3
  • Dynamic weather

About the Pokémon from Gen. 3, only 50 of them will be available at first, with more to be added over the next several weeks. Naturally, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip (the three starters) will be part of the first batch.

About the dynamic weather system, it’s not just for fancy effects in-game: the weather is now going to have an impact on the kind of Pokémon you can catch. For example, Mudkip (a Water-type Pokémon) will appear more frequently on rainy days. Also, you get more Stardust when you catch those Pokémon.

But that’s not all: attacks of certain types will be more effective during some weather conditions (just like in mainline Pokémon games). For example, Charizard’s Fire Spin will be more effective on sunny days.

The dynamic weather system is definitely a bigger deal than you’d think at first, though people living in regions where certain meteorological phenomenons (such as snow) are probably going to enjoy it less than people in countries with a more “diverse” climate. Fortunately, it doesn’t look like Pokémon are exclusive to rain or snow, they will simply appear more frequently.

Niantic lists 6 types of weather:

  • Sunny (Grass, Ground, Fire-types)
  • Rainy (Water, Electric, Bug-types)
  • Snowy (Ice, Steel-types)
  • Foggy (Dark, Ghost-types)
  • Partly Cloudy
  • Windy (Dragon, Flying, Psychic-types)

Finally, here’s some screenshots and footage of the dynamic weather system and the new Pokémon:
