Nintendo: official Super Mario Cereal hitting stores later this month in the US

Back in the latest mid/late 80’s, Nintendo partnered with Ralston Cereals to release the Nintendo Cereals System: officially licenced cereals featuring Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. And now, more than 30 years later, it’s time for Nintendo cereals to make their comeback with the Super Mario Cereal!

Ever since the company announced a stronger focus on the IP business (that resulted in the Vans collaboration, among others), a few years ago, many fans wondered (and hoped) if the company was going to bring back its official cereals. And it turns out the Nintendo Cereal System isn’t making a comeback (not now anyway), but we are indeed getting some new Nintendo cereals.

Earlier this week, the company announced that it partnered with Kellogs, in order to offer official Super Mario Cereal in the United States, starting later this month. The box features illustrations from Super Mario Odyssey, and the cereals inside (mixed barry flavoured) come with colourful power-up marshmallows.

But what’s really interesting about the Super Mario Cereal is that the box actually has a NFC chip inside, allowing it to function like an amiibo. You can scan the box in-game, in order to get gold coins or a heart (no special costume or anything, but that’s to be expected: it’s just some cereals… not $10-15 figures). A pretty nifty Nintendo-like twist!

This Super Mario Cereal box will start hitting store shelves across the US from December 11th, and it will be a limited edition (though we don’t know how long Kellogs plans to make it). If you’re interested in putting some Super Mario to your breakfast, make sure you head to your local supermarket as soon as possible!
