NPD: sales for May 2016 (United States), 3DS at 60 million worldwide, more data

According to the NPD, sales of video games in the United States generated $528.6 million in May 2016 (May 2nd to May 29), which is a 4% increase from May 2015 sales ($509.3 million). This is pretty good news for the market overall, which was rather weak in April (15% down compared to April 2015).

This time around, only Software was up, and both the Hardware and Accessories (including the toys-to-life segment, like amiibo or Skylanders) were down Year on Year.

Here’s the raw numbers:

  • Hardware: $137.7 million in May 2016 (-10% from $153.1 million)
  • Software: $241.9 million in May 2016 (+18 %from $204.7 million)
  • Accessories: $149 million in May 2016 (-2% from $151.5 million)

Software

The main reason Software sales are up in May 2016 compared to the same month in 2015 is the many popular releases that came out (unfortunately, none of them hit the Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS…). Sales almost doubled in units (50% for current-gen consoles), and increased by 108% in dollars, compared to May 2015. Overall, new sales amount to 51% of total Software sales in May 2016 in the United States.

Head after the break for Hardware sales!

Hardware

Hardware-wise, it’s once again portables and previous-gen platforms which are dragging down sales this month. According to the NPD, total sales dropped by 10%, with -$7.3 million for handhelds, and -$5 million for previous-gen platforms. As for current-gen platforms, sales were actually rather stable, though sales by dollars dropped by 2% (to $3 million) due to the price drops.

Also, Nintendo announced via a press release that total sales for the Nintendo 3DS have topped 60 million units worldwide: a pretty impressive number, though clearly disappointing compared to previous handhelds (you can see how much the market has changed this generation!).
