NPD: sales for June 2016 (United States), more data

According to the NPD, sales of video games in the United States generated $652.2 million in June 2016 (May 30th to July 3rd), which is a 22% drop from June 2015 sales ($878.7 million).

Here’s some raw data:

  • Hardware: $181.5 million (-42% compared to June 2015, from $313.1 million)
  • Home console and handheld software: $322 million (-20% compared to June 2015, from $402.7 million)
  • Physical and Steam PC software: $27.8 million (-20 percent compared to June 2015, from $34.8 million)
  • Accessories: $120.9 million (-6% compared to June 2015, from $129.1 million)

According to the NPD, most of that drop is due to poor comparison with June 2015, which was a pretty good month for the market. Sales of new releases dropped by 67%: that’s -1.8 million units sold, and -$114 million. LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens was one of the best-selling titles, but it sold five time less than Batman: Arkham Knight did last year, in June.

Overall, the decline in June for the whole market is 26%.Most of the drop comes from current gen platform: -43% (-$117 million).

Hardware-wise, the drop is 58% (by dollar). And things are not pretty, as the market but the following at once:

  • -15% in average prices
  • -32% in actual sales

In other words, less consoles were sold, and for less money.
