Nintendo Switch: customer reviews now available on web eShop (North America)

A few days ago, an important update for the web Nintendo eShop was pushed in North America, which now features customer reviews. It’s been one of the most highly-requested features, as currently, the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch does not feature any sort of customer reviews: no rating, no comments… nothing.

Since a few days ago, “Customer reviews” are now displayed on the product page of Nintendo Switch games:

  • just below the title, with the average rating
  • at the bottom of the page, with more details about the ratings given by players, but also actual written reviews

But what’s really interesting about this review system is that it’s directly tied to your Nintendo Account (it seems to show your Nintendo Account’s Mii), and you can only leave a review if you’ve played a game at least 2h (which as the same requirements as those for reviews on the Nintendo eShop of the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS.

If you leave a written review, then the number of hours you’ve played is displayed just below your username, and using the same “Played for more than X hours” text as the one found on Nintendo Switch profile pages. You can also flag your review to indicate it contains spoilers, which is pretty helpful for players who want to avoid them.

Right now, only the web Nintendo eShop in North America displays customer reviews, as there’s no sign of them on the European or Japanese websites as of writing. No sign of them on the actual Nintendo eShop, on Nintendo Switch, either.

Also, a quick look at the scripts ran on the website shows us that Nintendo is using the services provided by Power Reviews, and not a home solution.

It’s not clear whether this is a North America, web Nintendo eShop-only service, as Nintendo doesn’t seem to have made any sort of announcement regarding this particular feature. Hopefully, we do end up getting some more details in the very near future!

Thanks to the good folks over at Score Studios for the heads up!
