Nintendo Financial Results – Three Months Ended June 30, 2017 (April 1st – June 30th)

Today, the Nintendo financial results for the Three Months Ended June 30, 2017 were revealed, and they’re pretty good. The company is fully back in the black, and everything appears to be up Year on Year. Naturally, this is primarily due to the great sales of the Nintendo Switch, which has boosted sales significantly.

Nintendo Financial Results – Raw Data

Let’s start with some raw data:

  • Net Sales: 154 069 million Yen (1.185 billion € / 1.382 billion $ / 1.060 billion £), an increase of 148.6% over the same period last year (61 969 million Yen, a drop of 31.3% over the same period during the previous Fiscal Year);
  • Operating profit: 16 208 million Yen (123 million € / 143 million $ / 110 million £), an increase of ???% over the same period last year (5 134 million Yen loss);
  • Ordinary profit: 30 960 million Yen (238 million € / 277 million $ / 213 million £), an increase of ???% over the same period last year (38 674 million Yen loss);
  • Profit attributable to owners of parent: 21 260 million Yen (163 million € / 190 million $ / 146 million £), an increase of ???% over the same period last year (24 534 million Yen loss)
  • Digital sales: 32.5 billion Yen (as opposed to 43.9 billion Yen during the same period last year).

The graph shows the proportion of Software / Hardware / Other (accesories, amiibo) in sales, but also the geographical breakdown of sales. Sales are up in all regions, with 73.9% of total sales made outside Japan (a positive sign, as Europe + North America is a much bigger market). The Nintendo Switch makes for most of sales this quarter, which is another positive sign!

  • Nintendo 3DS (Software): 5.85 million units for Q1 2017-18 (26 new games launched) / 335.1 million units since launch (1 576 games launched)

Nintendo Financial Results – Nintendo comments

During the first quarter of the current Fiscal Year, Nintendo released a couple of high profiles titles on Nintendo Switch: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and ARMS, which sold 3.54 million units and 1.18 million units respectively. This is a great performance for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which should be able to outsell its Wii U counterpart (8.35 million units LTD).

As for ARMS, it’s a great debut for a brand new IP, with over 1 million units sold in less than a month (two weeks, to be precise). But the real test us yet to come: will it keep selling on the long run? Since there doesn’t seem to be any Super Smash Bros. game headed to the Nintendo Switch for the time being (at least, nothing has been announced so far!), ARMS definitely has potential to keep selling (at least throughout 2017).

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also kept selling steadily, with 1.16 million units sold worlwide (3.92 million units since launch). Of course, that’s just for the Nintendo Switch version!

Overall, the Nintendo Switch sold 1.97 million units during Q1 FY 2017-18 (despite the endless shortages), with 8.14 million units for Software.

Unfortunately, Nintendo wasn’t very talkative about the Nintendo 3DS… because there really wasn’t much to say. According to the company, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia has been a “popular title”, but did not share any sales data for it.

Hardware sales are up, with 950 000 units sold (+1%), but Software is down with 5.85 million units (-31%). This isn’t too surprising, given the small number of notable releases.

amiibo sales are quite limited, with only 1.60 million units for figures, and 1.30 million units for cards. Such sales are due to a low number of new amiibo and compatible games.

On the digital side, things have started to improve, thanks to strong sales of retail games and downloadable content on the Nintendo Switch. Sales are up by 41% Year on Year, with 11 billion Yen.

As for smart devices, Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes remained popular, which help boost smart device and IP related income to 9 billion (+450% Year on Year!).

Nintendo Financial Results – Forecast

For the current Fiscal Year, Nintendo is planning to release Splatoon 2 in July (that was last week!) and Super Mario Odyssey in October. The company also mentions “several big titles” from third-party publishers.

For the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo mentions the New Nintendo 2DS XL for Hardware, but also Hey! Pikmin (July) and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (November) for Software. There’s also “strong third-party titles on the way”, but Nintendo doesn’t name any.

Of course, let’s not forget the Nintendo Classic Mini / Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition / Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Famicom, releasing in September (Europe, North America) / October (Japan).

As for smart devices, Nitnendo doesn’t make any announcement, but simply mentions they will release new games while focusing on continued operations for already released titles. In other words: new games are coming, old games will keep getting new content.

Nintendo did not revise its Forecast for the current Fiscal Year.
