Media Create sales for Week 9, 2016 (Feb. 29 – March 6) [Top 50]

During Week 9, several games came out in Japan, but only two of them are on Nintendo 3DS. One of them actually made it to the Top 3: Haikyuu!! Cross team match!, which is #3 with 23 400 units sold. This is a pretty average debut: definitely better than many other licenced games, but still nothing to write home about.

According to Famitsu, only 40-60% of all units sent to retailers were effectively sold. Since that kind of game usually does not sell on long periods of time, retailers may have to “help” the game sell its Day 1 stock with some price cuts down the line.

The second entry did pretty poorly, with only 7 443 units sold: Doraemon: Shin Nobita no Nihon Tanjou. According to Famitsu, the sellthrough ratio is poor: 20-40%, which means that retailers still have many units left to sell. And with such a poor debut, there’s little reason to believe sales will pick up in the upcoming weeks.

Next: Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics, which is holding pretty well despite the many new releases this week (in fact, it even gained one place!). It sold 18 391 units during Week 9 (a drop of 17% compared to Week 9, which brings the total to 82 160. Thanks to steady sales, the game will definitely reach 100 000 units sold within the next two weeks.

As for Splatoon, it’s doing pretty well with +17% for Week 9. This increase seems to be due to the Wii U, which finally got new shipments this week in Japan. With 10 939 units sold this week, Splatoon is back in the Top 10. Unfortunately, due to the many new releases coming out in March, it might not manage to stay there too long, but it’s definitely going to stick around in the Top 20. One thing’s for sure: Splatoon is still as popular as ever in Japan!

As we just mentioned, the stock situation for the Wii U has improved in Japan, which is why Super Mario Maker is making its comeback in the Top 20. It’s now #15 (instead of #29, like last week), with 6 862 units sold during Week 9.

Since Nintendo sent Super Mario Maker sets to retailers, it’s no wonder to see the game’s sale rise this week (especially since the sets don’t stay very on retailers’ shelves). We can expect to see Super Mario Maker stick around now that shortages aren’t as severe as they were in the past few weeks.

With Splatoon and Super Mario Maker, Yo-kai Watch Busters is one of the few games which saw its sales incrase during Week 9. It sold 6 467 units this week (+2%), and 2 223 515 since launch. As for Mega Man Legacy Collection, it dropped off a cliff: it went straight from #2 to #18, with 6 343 units sold (-74%). However, it’s not really that surprising (or even worrying) for a collection of NES games. Finally, Monster Hunter X is #20 with 6 301 units sold (over 2.7 millions since launch).

Hardware-wise, there’s nothing special to note about the Nintendo 3DS. It sold 28 355 units during Week 8, which is slightly worse than last year during the same week. Without any major releases, Nintendo’s handheld seems to be holding pretty weel, and there’s no doubt sales will significantly improve within the next few weeks, especially with the release of Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 on March 24th.

As for the Wii U, shortages are still going on, but the situation has significantly improved compared to the past few weeks. The console sold 7 260 units during Week 9, which is a more “normal” level (it’s basically the same as Week 8 in 2015). Unfortunately, the Wii U should be selling more than it currently is, which is why it’s definitely good news that shortages seem to be about to become history… for now, at least.

Fortunately, Pokkén Tournament is coming out next week, and should provide a healthy boost for the Wii U (especially with the Premium Pack that comes out on the same day). Just how much of an impact the game itself and the bundle will have on sale remains to be seen, but it’s guaranteed to be a significant improvement over the past few weeks.
