Media Create: more sales data for Week 50 in Japan (incl. Wii U bundles)

Today, Media Create released its weekly report for video game sales in Japan, providing us with more sales data for Week 50. First, we learn that a total of 1 065 000 games were sold in Japan during that week, which is 121.39% of what was sold during Week 49. The amount of new games sold also increased, and went from 109 000 units to 234 000 units (thanks to more new releases).

During Week 50, sales for already-released games were 108.12% of their Week 49 level, and more than 1 million games (“old” and new) were sold. This is obviously due to the holiday period, which also boosted sales for Splatoon and Super Mario Maker: they sold around 51 000 and 49 000 units respectively. As for Monster Hunter X, it’s just below the 200 000 units/week threshold, with 192 203 units sold.

Hardware-wise, a total of 238 000 units were sold, which is 121.45% of what was sold last week in Japan. Media Create makes a special note about the Wii U, which sold an additional 15 000 units this week compared to Week 49. This is mostly due to the Super Mario Maker and Splatoon bundles, which make up for 36 000 of the 47 000 Wii U sold during Week 50 in Japan. This is 146.06% of what they sold during Week 49, so the increase is quite visible.
