Last week, XSEED published another Localisation Blog post for Lord of Magna, and also gave some details about the battle system. Today, it’s Marvelous Europe’s turn to write about it, with some additional details not mentionned by XSEED.

First: AP, or Action Points. Your characters need those in order to use their abilities, and quite logically, the more powerful an ability, the more AP are needed in order to use it. Just like in pretty much every other RPG, you gain new technique as you progress through the game, and your characters level up.

At each turn, you generally get 1 AP: you can then chose to attack or not, depending on your strategy. For example, you might want to stock up on AP before launching a powerful attack, but in that case, you’ll have to pull your character out of harm’s way. To get an extra turn, you can bowl enemies: if you manage to bowl ten or more, you get your extra turn.

The bowling mechanic is a central part of the Lord of Magna: Maiden Heaven’s battle system. By defeating enemies, you send them flying in the direction of your blow, and they knock down their allies nearby (which results in a higher combo kill bonus). Therefore, you really need to take your time and aim carefully, so you can take out as many enemies as possible with each blow.

Next: support abilities. To support your allies, you can use various support abilities: some of them improve stats, while others gives lots of AP (really useful if you need to launch a big attack or escape from a dangerous situation). Of course, there’s often a catch: for example, an ability improving attack can do so at the cost of defense.

Your characters can also equip Skill Chips, which provide offensive and support abilities, but also stats improvements, etc. Of course, you can’t equip as many chips as you want: each one has a cost in memory, and you can’t bypass your characters’ memory allowance.

Finally, there’s items: you can use them to replenish some health, or remove detrimental status. However, in Lord of Magna: Maiden Heaven, the focus is on battle items. Thanks to the crafting system, you can increase the power of those items, but also add some special effects (something you can use to take advantage of enemies’ elemental weaknesses.

5Here’s a new trailer for Lord of Magna – Maiden Heaven, focusing on the battle system:
