[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 42, 2020 (October 12 – October 18) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 42, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 42)

Week 42 was not the busiest of weeks for the Japanese markets, but at least, there’s a couple of new releases in the Top 10 Software.

The biggest release of the week is Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, which is off to a promising start with 73 918 units sold. The sell-through is a bit on the low side (54%), but it shows that Nintendo did ship enough copies for once. Considering accessories/toys like the Ring Con or the kart can take a while to manufacture, a big enough shipment for Week 1 means there shouldn’t be shortages as early as Week 2.

Since Nintendo is clearly hoping Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit to be the hot present for kids at Christmas, we will have to wait until January to see how well this unique game has performed. Sales at launch are quite promising, but how will they hold out in the weeks and months ahead? The biggest problem the game faces in Japan is that it requires a lot of space; this isn’t something you can play in a small apartment.

The second release of the week is quite unexpected: it’s the retail version of moon. This cult-classic JRPG enjoyed strong sales on the Nintendo eShop at launch, and its late retail release fared quite well (especially at such a price, though it does come with lots of neat goodies). It’s unlikely to hang around in the Top 10 for more than a week, but it’s still a performance Onion Games are going to be pretty satisfied with.

Unfortunately, nothing much to say about the usual evergreen titles this week; sales are slightly down, just Nintendo Switch sales themselves.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped below the 100 000 units threshold, but they remain unusually strong for the period with 95 582 units sold. Despite the release of Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, Nintendo actually shipped less consoles to Japan during Week 42 (108 575 units during Week 41), though it’s not like shipments took a dive or anything.

And despite that small drop, sales remain much higher than in 2019 during the same week (54 067 units, nearly twice less units). Q3 2020 has a much weaker line-up than Q3 2019 (which had Pokémon Sword and Shield, among others), so it will be interesting to see how the Nintendo Switch will fare in the coming weeks and months. One thing we already know is that sales are bound to remain strong at least until mid-January.

YTD sales now stand at 4 249 605 units, and it’s only a matter of weeks until 2020 sales top 2019 sales (4 493 885 units)… and the holiday season hasn’t even started yet! In comparison, the Nintendo Switch had “only” sold 2 718 508 units as of Week 42 2019. As for LTD sales, they now stand at 15 633 036 units, with 2 745 515 units for the Lite model, and 12 887 521 units for the OG model.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sold 856 units this week (down from 947 units during Week 41, and 1 110 units during Week 41 2019). YTD sales now stand at 56 227 units (down from 169 054 units in 2019), and LTD sales at 24 552 374 units.
