[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 4, 2021 (January 17 – January 23) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 4, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 4)

Week 4 was another quiet week for the video games market in Japan, without a single entry in the Top 10 Software. Therefore, it’s the usual suspects we find in the chart, starting with Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! at #1.

This week, the party game celebrates its 10th week in a row at the #1 position! It sold 92 793 additional units (-13%), which brings total sales to 1 710 394 units. The next milestone for retail sales (2 million units) will be reached sometime in February… and it’s clearly not done selling! Expect more milestones to be hit throughout the year.

Ring Fit Adventure is the only title that saw its sales increase this week (36 489 units sold), though the increase is fairly limited (+3%). Massive shortages may be a thing of the past, but demand remains quite strong.

No highlight this week. Sales are slowing down due to the usual post-holiday season slump, but they remain at a much higher level than usual for January. Starting next week, new releases will come shaking things up a bit, though the Top 10 Software will still have quite a lot of Nintendo Switch evergreen titles!

After a rather unexpected increase last week, Nintendo Switch sales went down this week. But despite that drop, they remain unusually strong for January, with no less than 110 811 units sold (down from 170 691 units last week).

In comparison, the console sold “only” 67 987 units during the same week last year, and it’s not like there’s some extremely popular new releases to boost sales this year (it’s still selling off the back of the likes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban!).

The gap between 2021 and 2020 sales is still widening, with already 761 219 units sold this year vs. 565 573 units last year (nearly 200 000 units gap). With the shortages that plagued the Japanese market in Q1 2020, it’s more than likely this gap will keep on widening in the coming weeks, especially with the new Super Mario model in February.

Also, the Nintendo Switch hit a new milestone this week: it’s now sold over 18 million units (18 101 593 units to be precise), with 3 224 391 units for the Lite model, and 14 877 202 units for the OG model. There’s little doubt it will reach the next one (19 million units) before the end of this quarter.

Finally, the Nintendo 3DS is still trucking along with 439 units sold this week (vs. 546 units last week, and 718 units last year), which brings YTD sales to 2 250 units (vs. 6 457 units last year), and LTD sales to 24 561 158 units.
