[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 34, 2020 (August 17 – August 23) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 34, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 34)

As expected for a post-Obon week, Week 34 was a rather uneventful week with not a single entry in the Top 10 and significant drops for virtually all games. And yet, the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch are no exception.

There’s only one Nintendo Switch game that saw an increase in sales this week: Ring Fit Adventure with 30 689 units sold (+17%), which brings total sales to 1 366 433 units. Naturally, that increase is due to Nintendo shipping more copies to retailers, as demand is still through the roof and well above what Nintendo are able to ship.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons saw the biggest drop of all evergreen titles, due to Nintendo shipping a lot less Nintendo Switch consoles this week. As explained before, the Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundle accounts for a significant chunk of sales for the game, so it’s no surprise that they would drop as much as they did.

Highlights this week include:

  • 06./06. [NSW] eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 (Konami) – 9.522 / 200.447 (-42%). It’s now sold over 200 000 units on Nintendo Switch alone, and not counting digital sales!

As expected, the post-Obon week for the Nintendo Switch was quite brutal (over 50% drop), but sales remain at an unsually high level with 70 129 units sold (down from 148 699 units last week). Sales are expected to bounce back up during Week 35, but it’s not clear whether they will go back in 6 digits territory again.

One of thing we do know is that demand continues to be extremely strong, and yes, lotteries are still the only way to buy the console at most retailers not called Amazon.

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold only 30 072 units during the same week last year. The Animal Crossing: New Horizons wave is still going strong, with the gap between 2020 and 2019 widening week after week (3 533 210 units vs. 1 862 831 units). Unfortunately, the console didn’t quite manage to beat the 2018 total as of this week (5 534 165 units), but it was certainly a close one!

Since launch, the Nintendo Switch has already sold 14 916 641 units, and the 15 million units milestone may well be reached as early as Week 34. The Nintendo Switch Lite has sold 2 528 241 units since launch, and the OG model 12 388 400 units.

Funnily enough, the Nintendo 3DS has managed to outsell the PlayStation 4 this week, despite its sales being as anemic as usual (1 171 units, only two units less than during Week 33). It’s definitely not something anyone could have seen coming, though of course, it’s due to shortages impacting the PS4 (as Sony is gearing up for next-gen).

The handheld sold 1 171 units this week, as opposed to 2 227 units during the same week last year. This brings YTD sales to 40 973 units (vs. 156 228 units last year as of Week 34), and LTD sales to 24 537 120 units.
