[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 31, 2021 (July 26 – August 01) [Top 30]
Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 31, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!
Famitsu (Week 31)
This week saw the release of several games, and a couple of them managed to land in the Top 10 Software. Unfortunately, sales are rather poor all around…
NEO: The World Ends With You is off to a downright terrible debut with only 27 000 units sold on the two platforms it was released on. The Nintendo Switch version was by far the most popular with 18 799 units, and only 9 248 units for the PlayStation 4 version.
In comparison, the original sold 81 326 units at launch (and nearly 200 000 units LTD). Unless strong word of mouth helps sustain sales in the upcoming weeks, then this long-awaited sequel may not even manage to outsell the launch sales of its predecessor. Unfortunately, single-player RPG tend to sell the most during the first couple of weeks, with used sales quickly cannibalising new sales. This certainly doesn’t bode well for the future of the series…
As for The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, it’s off to a fairly decent debut with 14 460 units sold on Nintendo Switch (the PlayStation 4 version did not chart, which means it sold less than 9 248 units). In comparison, the original games on Nintendo 3DS sold 136 191 units and 61 035 units respectively at launch (with 8 915 units for the bundle including the two games).
Also, this enhanced port of the two The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles games did better than the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy port (about 9 000 units at launch on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 combined). Of course, that Trilogy was a port of a port of games ported on Nintendo DS after being originally released on GameBoy Advance, so the sales potential was always limited in Japan.
Unfortunately, just like NEO: The World Ends With You, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is bound to drop out of the Top 30 Software pretty quickly. This sort of game rarely sells much beyond the first couple of weeks.
This time around, the gap between sales of the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions is wider than for the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy.
No particular milestones to note this week. The usual evergreen titles were impacted by the drop in Nintendo Switch sales, but managed to sell rather decently. Crayon Shin-chan: Ora to Hakase no Natsuyasumi – Owaranai Nanokakan no Tabi and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin were still heavily impacted by shortages.

This week again, the Nintendo Switch saw a noticeable drop in sales, with 62 865 units sold (down from 69 738 units last week). This Summer holiday season is particularly rough for the console this year, what with the lack of mega hit like Animal Crossing: New Horizons to boost sales and the announcement of the OLED model not really helping (the exact impact of the announcement is still hard to gauge).
That being said, sales remain perfectly decent, more in line with what you would expect for a console already in its 5th year on the market in fact! Last year, the Nintendo Switch saw a similar drop in sales, with 86 605 units sold. The gap between 2021 and 2020 sales keep melting like snow in the sun, and is now barely 210 000 units (3 351 944 units have been sold in 2021 so far, vs. 3 141 044 units in 2020 as of Week 31).
LTD sales now stand at 20 692 318 units, with 3 982 981 units for the Lite model and 16 709 337 units for the OG model.
As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sold 358 units this week (down from 491 units last week, and 776 units last year), which brings YTD sales to 18 656 units(down from 37 795 units last year) and LTD sales to 24 577 564 units.
