[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 30, 2020 (July 20 – July 26) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 30, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 30)

Week 30 was a rather quiet week on the new releases front, but sales remain strong for the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch due (in part) to two public holidays on Thursday and Friday (with a 4 day weekend).

The only release in the Top 10 is Ninjala, which is off to a rather decent debut with 11 693 units sold at launch. The game was already available for free on the Nintendo eShop when it launched, so it’s unlikely to have noteworthy sales beyond launch week.

For its second week, Paper Mario: The Origami King had a rather standard second week drop (-54%), It sold 50 643 additional units, which brings total sales to 159 735 units. It’s now sold over 150 000 units, and the 200 000 units milestone is just around the corner. It’s still a bit too early to say if it’s going to become the next evergreen title for the Nintendo Switch, unfortunately.

Other highlights this week:

  • 01./03. [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo) – 94.115 / 5.280.398 (+31%). It’s back at rank #1 yet again, and sales saw a major boost this week thanks to the two public holidays and the increase in Nintendo Switch shipments (especially the bundle with the game). Naturally, sales are not slowing down any time soon!
  • 05./07. [NSW] Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics <TBL> (Nintendo) {2020.06.05} (¥3.980) – 25.136 / 261.027 (+22%). It’s now sold over 250 000 units at retail alone, and that’s not counting digital sales (which remain strong to this day);
  • eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 has now sold over 250 000 units (+280 000 units), with 145 689 units for the Nintendo Switch version. The gap with the PlayStation 4 version is widening.

This week, all evergreen titles that are not heavily supply-constrained saw a significant increase in sales.

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales saw another increase, with no less than 125 231 units sold: a really impressive performance considering the lack of major releases. The reason the console is selling so well is still Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Its sales potential really is something else, and if there’s a game that has ever earned the title of “system seller”, it’s this one, especially as it managed to boost even further the sales of a console that was already selling really well.

Demand is so strong that, despite Nintendo increasing the size of shipments, the infamous lotteries at retailers are still the only way to be able to buy the console at most stores. It’s not clear when those will end, just like it’s not clear how long Animal Crossing: New Horizons will have such a strong impact on Hardware sales.

During Week 30 2020, the Nintendo Switch sold 3 times more than during the same week last year (42 689 units). Naturally, the gap between 2020 and 2019 sales just keeps on widening, with 1.3 million units in favour of 2020 so far. Sales have been so strong these past few months that the Nintendo Switch has already sold 3 million units in 2020 alone (3 054 439 units). By the end of Summer, it will be well on its way to the next milestone, 4 million units YTD!

There was another milestone this week: 12 million units LTD for the OG model, which remains by far the most popular model. With the exception of its launch month, and earlier this year when the OG model was completely sold out, the Lite model hasn’t been able to “compete” with the OG model at all. It’s still managed to sell 2 424 872 units, but for Japanese consumers, it’s pretty clear which model offers the best value.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo 3DS is back in 4 digital territory, with 1 042 units, and almost outsold the PlayStation 4 (which is virtually sold out). In comparison, the handheld sold 903 units last week, and 2 667 units during Week 30 2019. LTD sales now stand at 37 019 units (vs. 140 450 units last year), and LTD sales at 24 533 166 units.
