[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 3, 2021 (January 11 – January 17) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 3, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 3)

Week 3 was another quiet week for the Japanese market, without a single entry in the Top 10 Software. Therefore, it’s no wonder that Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! is once again #1 of sales, and for the 9th week in a row.

Fun fact, it’s the only game in the Top 10 that actually saw an increase in sales this week, with 107 064 units sold (+23%). This brings total sales to 1 617 601 units at retail alone since launch. There’s little doubt now it will reach 2 million units at retail by the end of February, unless sales were to drop dramatically during the next few weeks (which seems highly unlikely at this point).

Highlights this week include:

  • 06./06. [NSW] Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Nintendo) {2020.06.05} (¥3.980) – 15.295 / 601.384 (-27%). It’s now sold over 600 000 units at retail alone. It was the second best-selling game on the Nintendo eShop in 2020. Definitely one of the most interesting success stories on Nintendo Switch!

This week, all games except Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! saw a soft drop in sales. Despite that, sales remain unusually strong for January, especially right after the end of the holiday season. It seems that the State of Emergency in several prefectures across Japan is having a noticeable impact on sales, just like it did last year.

Quite surprisingly, Nintendo Switch sales are slightly up this week with 170 691 units sold (up from 167 596 units last week). It looks like the State of Emergency declared in several prefectures across Japan had a positive impact on sales (with people seeking entertainment at home), and unlike last year when they were taken by surprise (and had to deal with factories closing in China), Nintendo are still coping with demand (so far).

The results: sales that are far stronger than usual for January. In comparison, the console sold “only” 96 408 units during the same week last year. The gap between 2021 and 2020 is already widening, with 650 408 units sold so far this year, and 497 586 units in 2020.

LTD sales now stand at 17 990 782 units, which means the next milestone (18 million units sold) will be reached next week. It’s looking more and more likely that, unless shortages come back in full force, the Nintendo Switch will reach 20 million units by the end of Q1 2021. So far, the Lite model has sold 3 200 965 units, and the OG model 14 789 817 units.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are down to 546 units (vs. 561 units last week, and 766 units last year during the same week), which brings YTD sales to 1 811 units (vs. 5 739 units) and LTD sales to 24 560 719 units.
