[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 27, 2021 (June 28 – July 04) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 27, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 27)

Week 26 was a really busy week for the video games market in Japan with lots of new releases in the Top 10 Software. But Week 27 is the complete opposite: there’s not a single entry in that same Top 10 Software! This allows some pretty familiar faces to make their comeback, helped by (yet another) increase in Nintendo Switch sales.

Mario Golf: Super Rush had a solid second week with 31 685 units sold (-61%), which brings total sales to 112 115 units at retail alone. It will have no trouble selling over 200 000 units before the end of the Summer holiday season!

As for Samurai Warriors 5, it had a better second week on Nintendo Switch than on PlayStation 4, with 11 555 units sold (-70%), which brings total sales to 50 246 units. The PlayStation 4 version has now sold 65 967 units LTD, and it will be interesting to see if the Nintendo Switch version will be able to catch up or not (and if yes, when!). Both versions have now sold over 115 000 units combined.

Due to the complete lack of notable releases, the usual evergreen titles that were kicked out of the Top 10 Software last week are back. They all saw their sales increase this week, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury enjoying the strongest increases (+23% and +24% respectively).

No particular milestone this week, though Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will reach 800 000 units sold at retail alone this week, and is well on its way to reach 1 million (probably before the end of the year)!

This week, Nintendo Switch sales went back up with 84 494 units sold (up from 72 951 units last week). Once again, sales are up despite the complete lack of notable releases, which shows that demand for the console remain unsually strong, and that the usual evergreen titles are as attractive as ever.

Once more, the increase impacts pretty much exclusively the OG model, which is the only model that can become somewhat hard to find in stores (no widespread shortages like last year, though).

Last year, “only” 52 250 units were sold during the same week, which means that the gap between 2020 and 2021 widened some more this week with 3 085 951 units sold so far this year and 2 719 132 units sold as of Week 27 last year.

The massive shortages that impacted the Nintendo Switch last year ended with the Summer holiday season, and so it will be interesting to see how long 2021 sales will be able to keep up… especially with the recent announcement of the Nintendo Switch OLED model.

Right now, it’s not clear how the market will react to that announcement. For example, how many people will hold out for the new model? Is the increased price tag going to hold back sales or not? How big of an impact will it have on sales before and after launch? Will this new model cannibalise sales of the OG and/or Lite model?

One thing’s for sure: the next couple of months are going to be pretty interesting for Nintendo Switch sales!

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales are once again up this week with 732 units sold (up from 519 units last week, but 933 units last year). YTD sales now stand at 16 595 units (vs. 34 273 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and LTD sales at 24 575 232 units.
