[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 26, 2021 (June 21 – June 27) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 26, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 26)

Week 26 was a pretty busy week for the video games market in Japan, with quite a lot of new games in the Top 10 Software.

The biggest release of the week is Mario Golf: Super Rush with about 80 000 units sold at launch. That’s a strong debut, especially compared to the previous entry on Nintendo 3DS (Mario Golf: World Tour with 58 743 units sold). Also, there’s digital sales to take into account (the game was #4 of sales last week).

It’s not the best debut ever for the series (that’s Mario Golf 64 with 126 108 units sold at launch), but if you add digital sales, it should be the second best debut (Mario Golf on GameBoy sold 92 760 units at launch). The next few weeks will show us what to expect for the long-term sales potential, but at the very least, this new entry should have no trouble outselling its predecessor (134 782 units for Mario Golf: World Tour on Nintendo 3DS).

As for Samurai Warriors 5, it’s off to a pretty disappointing debut with only 94 000 units sold on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 combined. In comparison, Samurai Warriors 4 sold about 193 000 units when it launched on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita back in 2014. Unsurprisingly, the PlayStation 4 version was the best-selling version (pretty usual for Warriors games), but the gap keeps getting smaller with each release.

Finally, The Caligula Effect 2 is off to a rather muted start with 10 243 units sold on Nintendo Switch. The game did not chart on any other platform, so as of writing, we’re not sure how much it sold in total. In comparison, the original sold 28 960 units on PlayStation Vita (and then 18 974 units two years later on PlayStation 4)

Unfortunately, there’s so many new games in the Top 10 this week, it’s hard to say how the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch are faring. Ring Fit Adventure are certainly doing well, at least!

This week, the Nintendo Switch saw another minor drop in sales with 72 951 units sold (down from 75 077 units last week). Fortunately, the console did manage to sell just enough units to reach the next milestone: 3 million units YTD (3 001 457 units). And it did so even before the end of the first semester! Unsurprisingly, the OG model was the most popular with over 2/3 of total sales (2 156 439 units sold vs. 845 018 units for the Lite model).

And as expected, Year on Year comparisons are getting tougher for 2021. Granted, the console is still selling insolently well, but it’s not quite enough to keep up with 2020 sales anymore.

Last year, 93 799 units were sold during the same week, which is why the gap between 2021 and 2020 got a bit smaller this week (3 001 457 units for 2021 vs. 2 666 882 units for 2020). It’s unlikely said gap will close any time soon, but the upcoming Summer holiday season is going to be crucial to determine if/when 2021 sales will start falling behind 2020 sales.

As of this week, the Nintendo Switch has sold 20 341 831 units, with 16 424 721 units for the OG model, and 3 917 110 units for the Lite model.

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales increased some more this week with 519 units sold (up from 481 units last week, but down from 944 units last year). LTD sales now stand at 15 863 units sold (down from 33 340 units last year), and LTD sales at 24 574 771 units.
