[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 23, 2020 (June 01 – June 07) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 23, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 23)

Week 23 saw the release of a few games, but none of them was able to outsell Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is once again ranked #1. However, with “only” 97 810 units sold, it dropped below the 100 000 units/week threshold for the very first time since launch. Of course, it’s still far from being done selling, quite the opposite! This week, sales only dropped by 5%, and the Summer holiday season isn’t all that far.

Since launch, the game has sold over 4 783 229 units sold, and it will reach the 5 million units milestone before the end of the month.

The most popular new release this week is Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, which is off to a great start with 64 443 units sold during the first week. In comparison, the Nintendo DS entry sold 64 994 units at launch, which means that the Nintendo Switch entry had a significantly better debut (since there’s also digital sales to take into account, and there was no digital sales on Nintendo DS).

The Nintendo DS entry went on to sell over 630 000 units, and there’s little reason to doubt Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics will not sell as much.

Due to the extremely positive word of mouth, the strength of the Nintendo Switch platform, and the low price of the game, it’s pretty safe to expect it to keep on selling steadily over the next few weeks and months, and become the latest in a long series of evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch. It could even go and sell over 1 million units LTD (including digital), though it’s a bit early to say for sure.

The other new release in the Top 10 Software is Kowloon Youma Gakuenki: Origin of Adventure, which is off to a decent debut with 11 774 units sold at retail. In comparison, the original on PlayStation 2 sold 23 429 units at launch (and 41 726 units LTD), so that’s a fairly solid performance for a remaster. Unfortunately, as this is a really niche release, it’s most likely going to be gone from the Top 30 as early as next week.

Other highlights this week include:

  • 03./03. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure <HOB> (Nintendo) {2019.10.18} (¥7.980) – 29.487 / 986.046 (-25%). It could reach 1 million units sold as early as next week, but sales are expected to drop sharply due to shortages, so it may miss that milestone by a week;
  • 04./02. [NSW] Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition # <RPG> (Nintendo) {2020.05.29} (¥5.980) – 16.786 / 107.575 (-82%). Decent second week, in line with the usual second week for JRPG. It’s now sold over 100 000 units since launch (105 575 units to be precise). Next few weeks will show whether it has the potential to sell over 200 000 units at retail alone;
  • 10./10. [NSW] Minecraft # <ADV> (Microsoft Game Studios) {2018.06.21} (¥3.600) – 7.082 / 1.406.932 (+5%). It’s now sold over 1.4 million units.

As expected, Nintendo Switch sales went back down this week (again due to insufficient stocks): it sold 68 192 units (down from 107 593 units last week). That being said, they remain unusually strong for the period, as only 33 590 units were sold during the same week last year (and that was without shortages).

Unfortunately, it’s pretty hard to predict the sales trajectory for the platform, as sales depend entirely on the size of the shipments Nintendo send to retailers. With all those shortages, what Nintendo ship is what is sold during a given week.

The gap between 2019 and 2020 just keeps on widening, with 2 439 468 units sold so far this year, as opposed to 1 361 317 units in 2019. LTD sales now stand at 13 822 899 units, with 2 285 860 units for the Lite model, and 11 537 039 units for the OG model.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are hanging just above the 1 000 units/week threshold, with 1 180 units sold this week (vs. 1 157 units last week, and 2 732 units during the same week last year). YTD sales now stand at 30 240 units (vs. 122 502 units last year as of Week 23), and LTD sales at 24 526 387 units.
