[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 22, 2021 (May 24 – May 30) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 22, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 22)

Week 22 was a slow week for the video games market in Japan, without a single new Nintendo Switch game in the Top 10 Software. Last week’s two main entries followed two different sales trajectory during their second week.

Miitopia performed well with 34 451 units sold (-53%), which brings total sales to 107 176 units. A pretty decent second week, which bodes well for long-term sales.

On the other hand, sales for Rune Factory 5 plummeted to 12 903 units; that’s a 87% drop compared to launch week. It would appear that poor word of mouth due to many issues at launch are indeed hurting sales, though it’s too early to say how big the impact is since the previous entry on Nintendo 3DS also saw a big drop during its second week. Total sales now stand at 115 756 units.

Milestones this week include:

  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury has now sold over 750 000 units (757 936 units), with 8 587 units sold this week (-16%). It will have no trouble reaching the 1 million units milestone by the end of the year.

The various evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch performed as usual; their sales are either stable or slightly down. Minecraft is the only exception, with +12% this week with 11 635 units sold. It’s approaching the 2 million units milestone steadily, and should hit it by the end of the month!

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped to 71 148 units (down from 99 118 units) during Week 22. Despite that drop, they remain at an unusually high level for late May, especially without major new releases to sustain them.

Last year saw a pretty major restock during that same week (107 593 units sold), which is why Nintendo Switch sales are down Year on Year this week. Of course, that’s not enough for the gap between 2021 and 2020 to close anytime soon (2021 is still ahead with about 300 000 units more than 2020). So far, 2 677 904 units have been sold this year vs 2 371 276 units in 2020.

The next few months are going to be pretty interesting for 2021 vs 2020 comparisons, for several reasons. First, 2021 doesn’t really have any game big enough to boost sales this Summer (but line-up is pretty stacked, and evergreen titles are still quite popular, so it’s not like sales are going to drop off a cliff or anything). Sustaining such a high level of sales is going to be tricky.

Second, if Nintendo do end up announcing their rumoured new Nintendo Switch model before E3, then sales are definitely going to take a hit in the weeks that follows. And even if they don’t announce it in June, sales are still going to slow down due to a large number of people already owning the console.

Third, the stock situation improved significantly during the Summer season, so it will be harder for 2021 weeks to surpass 2020 weeks.

This week, the Nintendo Switch hit a significant milestone: it’s now sold over 20 million units since launch (something we already touched upon yesterday, when Famitsu shared an early report about it). It’s now joined the very select club of consoles that have sold over 20 million units in Japan:

  • Nintendo DS: 32 990 000 units
  • GameBoy (including GameBoy Color): 32 470 000 units
  • Nintendo 3DS: 25 150 000 units
  • PlayStation 2: 21 980 000 units

In a couple of months, the Nintendo Switch will outsell the PlayStation 2, and by the end of the year, it will be pretty close to outselling the Nintendo 3DS. Outselling the behemoths that are the GameBoy and the Nintendo DS is going to be tough, but it’s definitely possible if the new Nintendo Switch model proves a big hit and revitalizes sales.
