[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 14, 2021 (March 29 – April 04) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 14, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 14)

Week 14 was a bit more quiet for the video games market in Japan, but sales remain fairly strong across the board.

Monster Hunter Rise had a good second week with 277 604 units sold at retail alone. That’s a 79% drop compared to launch week, which is fairly standard for the series. This brings total sales at retail to 1 579 736 units. Since Japan accounts for over 50% of worldwide sales, that means the game has sold about 2.5 million units including digital. This puts digital sales at nearly 1 million units.

At the moment, the game is still hard to find in stores, though new shipments are fairly substantial. Due to how strong digital sales have been, it’s unlikely Monster Hunter Rise will get anywhere past games, as those sold mostly at retail (even if digital sales for Monster Hunter 4 were quite substantial, due to, once again, shortages).

Monster Hunter Rise should reach the 2 million units milestone at retail by the end of the month (early May at the latest).

Milestones this week include:

  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury has now sold over 600 000 units (620 516 units to be precise), thanks to 27 833 units (-25%) sold this week.

The usual evergreen titles all saw a soft drop in sales, which remain fairly strong.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales saw a sharp drop (nearly -50%), which is due to several factors:

  • the “natural” drop that follows a major release (especially if that release was accompanied by a special bundle, which was the case here);
  • shortages, that have been impacting the OG model these past few months (far more than the Lite model). One easy way to check if that model is selling out is to compare its sales with those of the Lite model. When they’re unusually close, like this week (72 184 units for the OG model and 92 982 units for the Lite model), that’s pretty much always because the OG model is hard to find in stores.

The Nintendo Switch sold 135 076 units this week (down from 267 497 units last week). In comparison, the console sold 154 640 units last year, but it was the week just before shortages went from bad to incredibly worse (they dropped to 25 000 units). That’s why the gap between 2021 and 2020 sales is going to go back to widening next week; right now, it’s less than 30 000 units (1 880 050 units in 2021 vs 1 854 992 units in 2020).

LTD sales now stand at 19 220 424 units, with 15 630 549 units for the OG model and 3 589 875 units for the Lite model.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales dropped to 752 units (down from 933 units last week, and 1 230 units last year), while YTD sales stand at 10 120 units (vs. 16 400 units last year), and LTD sales at 24 569 028 units.
