[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 10, 2021 (March 01 – March 07) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 10, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 10)

Week 10 was a rather quiet week for the video games market in Japan without a single entry in the Top 10 Software. The two big releases from last week both saw a sharp drop in sales.

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town sold 33 677 units this week (236 073 units since launch), which is a slightly worse second week drop than usual (-82%). It would appear that the game is indeed suffering from negative word of mouth due to technical issues at launch, though it’s unclear how big the impact will be on long-term sales. If the first patch is released soon, then Marvelous have the opportunity to turn things around.

Meanwhile, Bravely Default II had a fairly standard second week drop with 19 841 units sold (-79%). This brings total sales to 112 902 units at retail alone. It looks like so far, Square-Enix have managed to avoid wide spread shortages (unlike most of their releases on Nintendo Switch), but the game is getting harder and harder to find in stores.

Highlights this week include:

  • 01./03. [NSW] Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (Nintendo) – 53.603 / 476.387 (-28%). It’s back at the top spot, and will hit the 500 000 units milestone next week!
  • 03./04. [NSW] Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! (Konami)- 31.760 / 2.006.555 (-22%). It’s now sold over 2 million units at retail alone;
  • 07./09. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) {2018.12.07} (¥7.200) – 12.052 / 4.187.325 (+21%). It saw a usbstantial increase thanks to the release of the latest DLC character.

Famitsu – Hardware

This week again, the Nintendo Switch saw an increase in sales with 89 927 units sold (up from 78 049 units last week). It looks like Nintendo are well prepared this year, and even if it may be hard to find some models in stores, there does not seem to be any widespread shortages (and especially not on the same scale as last year).

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold “only” 50 585 units during the saw week last year, during the build up to the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In all likelihood, the whole of Q1 will see sales rather stable compared to last year So far, the gap between 2021 and 2020 sales is about 350 000 units, with 1 315 763 units sold this year (vs. 967 941 units last year).

LTD sales now stand at 18 656 137 units, with 3 379 435 units for the Lite model, and 15 276 702 units for the OG model.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are actually up this week with 790 units sold (up from 673 units last week, but down from 1 297 units during the same week last year). YTD sales now stand at 6 749 units (down from 11 846 units last year), and LTD sales at 24 565 657 units LTD.
