Japan: more sales data for Week 50 2017, Yo-kai Watch Busters 2, Switch, more (Media Create, Dengeki)

Week 50 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 50, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 1 205 000 units, which is 123.69% of Week 49 sales. Sales crossed the 1 million units mark, which is pretty standard for the holiday season.

Sales of new releases were stable (95.98% of Week 49 sales), and it’s from previously released games that the increase comes from (136.78% of Week 49 sales). Again, this is pretty standard for the holiday season, when parents buy games for their kids and generally don’t go for the latest releases (unless it’s a major title like Pokémon).

The main new release this week was Yo-kai Watch Busters 2: it had a disappointing debut, with only 209 000 units. It certainly could have been worse, but it’s still a major drop from the original (694 000 units sold at launch).

It looks like retailers did expect a drop, but not that it would be that sharp: sell-through ratio is 45.23% for the Sword version and 44.69% for the Magnum version. In comparison, the original had a sell-through of 59.92% and 86.19% (with one version being much more popular than the other, for some reason).

What’s more, Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 sold less than the third version of Yo-kai Watch 3 (Sukiyaki), which opened with 338 000 units sold (77.32% sell-through ratio) one week earlier, in 2016. For Media Create, it’s pretty clear that Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 is off to a sluggish start, and is the sign of a clear drop in popularity for the Yo-kai Watch series.

Day 1 sell-through (Media Create)

Here’s the Day 1 sell-through for a couple of games on Nintendo platforms:

  • [3DS] Medabots Classics: 20th Anniversary Edition (Imagineer) (¥12.000) – 50%. Low sales;
  • [3DS] Medabots Classics: Metabee Ver. / Rokusho Ver. (Imagineer) – 50%. Low sakes;
  • [PS4] [PSV] [NSW] Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings (Koei Tecmo) – 60%. Low sales, with the Nintendo Switch version being the worst-selling one. However, it’s said to be very close to the PlayStation Vita version, so things could change over the week-end.

Week 50 (Dengeki)

Dengeki report that Super Mario Odyssey was once again #1 of sales, and for the 5th week in a row. It sold 124 000 additional units during Week 50, bringing to the total to over 1 million units (becoming the second million-seller on Nintendo Switch, after Splatoon 2).

As for Yo-kai Watch Busters 2, it sold 196 000 units (even less than what Media Create reported), with a low sell-through ratio: 45% for both versions. That’s a pretty big drop from the 703 000 units of the original (over 2.3 million units LTD). Just like Media Create, Dengeki point out that the popularity of the Yo-kai Watch series as a whole has dropped, and that the Yo-kai Watch mania is truly behind us now.

Other sales data for this week include:

  • Harvest Moon: A Tale of Two Towns+ with 15 000 units sold
  • Splatoon 2: 72 000 units sold this week, 1 557 000 units LTD
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 48 000 units sold this week, 973 000 units LTD

Dengeki point out that sales of Nintendo Switch games have been increasing steadily over the past few weeks.

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch dominated sales with 219 000 units sold (+31.6% compared to the previous week). It was in fact the best week for the console following the launch one (336 000 units sold).

As of this week, the Nintendo Switch has sold 2.91 million units in Japan, with 6 120 000 units for Software (50 games). That means the attach rate for the console is about 2.1

While everything seems to be going well for the Nintendo Switch, Dengeki points out a rather worrying trend: only Nintendo games are truly selling well on the platforms. The thing is, Nintendo games account for 80.7% of total Software sales, which is… well, not really good. In other words, Nintendo is the only company carrying the Nintendo Switch.

The low sales for 3rd-party publishers are not too surprising, as the majority of them were caught unprepared, and clearly didn’t expect the Nintendo Switch to catch on like it did. So far, the console has mostly gotten (late) ports from them, or original games with limited appeal (such as Lost Sphear or Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon, which sold poorly on all platforms).

Hopefully, things will change in 2018, as it’s pretty clear Nintendo cannot carry the Nintendo Switch on their own… not in the long term, at least. Dengeki expects that third-party publishers will eventually find success on the Nintendo Switch, which would revitalise the market as a whole.
