Japan: more sales data for Week 16, 2017, March, Fiscal Year, more (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Week 16 (Media Create)

Last week, Media Create published its weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 16, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 474 000 units, which is 170.91% of Week 15 sales. They note that even though sales of already released titles dropped by 47 000 units, sales of new releases increased from 13 000 units to 256 000 units. It’s the first time in 5 weeks that sales increased from the previous week.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia sold about 130 000 units, which is significantly less than Fire Emblem Fates and its 304 000 units sold. Granted, that game was available in two versions, but even that wasn’t enough to convince Media Create that Fire Emblem Echoes’ sales were not disappointing.

According to them, the game was not able to retain the new fans from Fire Emblem Fates, or bring on board new players from Fire Emblem Heroes.

However, Media Create do note that this remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden sold more or less the same as the previous Fire Emblem remake on Nintendo DS (Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, with 136 000 units on launch week and 278 000 units LTD). In other words, Fire Emblem Echoes was at least able to retain the “core” fans that bought the previous remake.

Week 16 (Dengeki)

For Dengeki, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is off to a good start, with about 143 000 units sold (sell-through ratio: 80%). Pro Yakyuu Famista Climax also did well, with 44 000 units sold during the first few days (sell-through ratio: 65%), which is almost twice better than the previous entry (Pro Yakyuu Famista Returns, with 24 000 units sold on launch week, and 110 000 units LTD).

For the Fiscal Year 2016-17 (that ended on March 31st), Nintendo is the publisher that sold the most games, and so for the 14th year in a row. Best-sellers include Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS with 1.03 million units, and Kirby Planet Robobot with 510 000 units.

Unfortunately, Nintendo’s market share dropped sharply from 26.4% to 17.4%… not surprising with the agonising Wii U! Not to mention that Pokémon games are published by The Pokémon Company, not directly by Nintendo (unlike in Europe and North America).

Speaking of the Pokémon Company, it was the second most successful publisher in Japan, jumping straight from #22 to #2 thanks to one game: Pokémon Sun and Moon (over 3.88 million units). With that one title, their marketshare jumped to 12.6%.

Square-Enix was #3 (it was #4 last year), thanks to Final Fantasy XV (over 930 000 units sold). As a result, Bandai-Namco dropped to #4, despite the good sales of Tales of Berseria (over 230 000 units). No change for Level-5, who is still #5, with their best-seller being Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura / Sukiyaki (over 2.18 million units).

Finally, Capcom dropped from #2 to #6, due to Monster Hunter XX selling less than Monster Hunter X the previous year (1.77 million units).

March – Digital estimates (Famitsu)

Monster Hunter XX topped sales at retail in March 2016, and unsurprisingly, it also topped them on digital store fronts. Snipperclips: Cut it out, together! also did rather well, with digital sales estimated at 39 726 units. That’s actually more than The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch, with 33 500 units sold (only 6 700 units on Wii U). As for 1-2-Switch, it only sold 5 817 units digitally.
