Japan: more sales data for Monster Hunter XX, Week 11, 2017, more (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 11)

Today, Media Create published its weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 11, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 1 341 000 units, which is 249.05% of Week 10 sales. As for Hardware, sales topped 138 000 units, which is 105.34% of Week 10 sales. Naturally, such significant increases are due to Monster Hunter XX, released on Saturday (March 18th).

Media Create notes that it’s the first time since Christmas that more than one million units were sold for Software. Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS greatly benefited from the release of Monster Hunter XX, as its sales during Week 11 amount to 178.54% of Week 10 sales.

Unfortunately, Media Create does not have only positive things to say about Monster Hunter XX, as it didn’t sell nearly as well as its predecessors:

  • Monster Hunter X: 1 488 000 units at launch (91.84% sell-through ratio);
  • Monster Hunter 4G: 1 446 000 untis at launch (85.40% sell-through ratio);
  • Monster Hunter XX: 848 467 units at launch (72.39% sell-through ratio, which means about 1 172 078 units were shipped for Day 1).

In other words, Monster Hunter XX had a rather disappointing debut for a Monster Hunter game, with lower sales and worse sell-through ratio.

Dengeki (Week 11)

Quite interestingly, Dengeki reports significantly higher sales and sell-through ratio: 995 000 units and 80% respectively. They also note that it’s quite the drop compared to the original release (1 521 000 units at launch, 95% sell-through ratio), though they expect holiday break to support sales in the upcoming weeks.

Dengeki then compared third-week sales for the latest Nintendo (home) consoles:

  • Nintendo Switch: 45 000 units (443 000 units since launch)
  • Wii U: 548 000 units since launch
  • Wii: 555 000 units since launch

They note that the console is still pretty hard to find in stores (though it looks like retailers finally got substantial shipments this week), which is definitely limits potential sales.

They also share some data about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which sold 30 000 units this week (278 000 units since launch), and is still the best-selling Nintendo Switch title so far. They compare it to the other best-selling titles on previous Nintendo (home) consoles:

  • Wii: Wii Sports (was not bundled in Japan) – 28.1% of total Wii Software sales, 57.3% attach-rate;
  • Wii U: New Super Mario Bros. U – 44.6% of total Wii U Software sales, 57.2% attach-rate
  • Nintendo Switch: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 52.4% of total Nintendo Switch Softwar sales, 62.8% attach-rate.

They note that this game is the main driving force for the Nintendo Switch.
