Japan: more sales data for Week 9 2019, Fiscal Year 2018-19 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 9)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 394 000 units, which is 97.05% of Week 8 sales.

This week saw the release of many, many games: 23 in total, which is 10 more than during Week 8. However, pretty much all of them sold relatively low amounts, and the best-selling game is Dead or Alive 6 with only 26 000 units sold.

As a result, sales of new releases dropped: they only amount for 68.30% of Week 8 sales. Sales of previously released games did increase (109.35% of Week 8 sales), but it wasn’t enough to fully compensate for the drop in new games sales.

But while Software sales are down, Hardware sales are actually up. And once again, it’s pretty much only due to the Nintendo Switch… though the console does have to share the spotlight with the New Nintendo 2DS XL, of all platforms!

Total Hardware sales topped 90 000 units, which is 125.72% of Week 8 sales. Nintendo Switch sales saw a healthy increase (128.90% of Week 8 sales), but that’s nothing compared to the increase for the New Nintendo 2DS XL (183.06% of Week 8 sales). Of course, sales of the handheld are nothing to write home about, but it’s certainly interesting to see them nearly double Week on Week, and seemingly without anything to explain it.

Media Create point out that this week, Hardware sales amount for 110.75% of sales during the same week last year: a sign that the market is recovering.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 10)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for just one game, and it’s on Nintendo 3DS:

  • [3DS] Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn <ACT> (Nintendo) (¥4.980) – 20%. Lowish debut, was expected for such a late release. Sales should improve during the weekend, but it’s clear retailers will end up with lots of unsold copies by the end of the week…

Dengeki (Week 9)

For the first time in 8 weeks, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is back at the top of the Top 50 Software with 25 848 units sold… barely a few hundred units more than Dead or Alive 6! It has now sold about 2 963 000 units, and if it keeps selling at the same pace, Dengeki expect it to reach the 3 million units milestone before the end of the month.

As for Zoids Wild: King of Blast, Dengeki report that it sold 10 763 units during its launch week.

And this week again, Dengeki share data about the market as of the end of February (February 24th to be precise)

  • Hardware: 5.49 million units (-18.7%) / 164.8 billion Yen (-12.7%)
  • Software: 24.83 million units (-17.3%) / 162.1 billion Yen (-14.3%)
  • Total: 326.9 billion Yen (-13.5%)

The Nintendo Switch is pretty much the only platform that saw an increase in sales. That increase is a bit subdued when it comes to Hardware, with +12.8% (3.64 million units), but it’s a different story for Software with +61.4% Year on Year (13.28 million units).

But despite the good performances of the Nintendo Switch, Hardware sales as a whole are down Year on Year. The reason for that lies in all the other platforms, which saw a major drop in sales:

  • PlayStation 4 – Hardware: 1.33 million units (-29.4%) / Software: 8.67 million units (-16.1%)
  • PlayStation Vita: -50% (Hardware and Software)
  • Nintendo 3DS: -70% (Hardware and Software)

Dengeki explain that for the market to be stable Year on Year (406.6 billion Yen), the last month of the current Fiscal Year (March) needs a major boost in sales. Basically, they need to top 79.7 billion Yen, which is nearly 3 times more than last year during the same month (28.7 billion Yen).

Given the current market trends and upcoming releases, it’s pretty clear that reaching such a figure is going to be quite difficult. Dengeki is well aware of that, which is why they’re instead looking forward to how much March will allow total sales to close the gap with Fiscal Year 2017-18 figures instead.
