Japan: more sales data for Week 49 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 49)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that total Software sales topped 1 731 000 units during Week 49, which is 344.55% (over 3 times!) of Week 48 sales. Naturally, that rather dramatic increase is due to the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which also boosted Hardware sales and more precisely the Nintendo Switch. Total Hardware sales topped 373 000 units.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold over 1.21 million units, and performed significanttly better than Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (945 000 units at launch, back in 2014). Just like in the United Kingdom, it’s the best debut ever for a Super Smash Bros. game.

And it looks like both Nintendo and retailers were ready for the strong performance, because the sell-through ratio for launch week is 68.52%. With such a sizeable shipment, retailers didn’t run out of copies to sell, and even if they were starting to run short, they had enough time to order more. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS wasn’t that fortunate, with a really high sell-through at launch: 93.45%.

Naturally, with the holiday season in full swing, Media Create expect sales to remain strong in the weeks ahead.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 50)

This week, we have the Day-1 sell-through for a few Nintendo Switch games:

  • [NSW] [PS4] Fortnite <ACT> (Warner Entertainment Japan) (¥3.000) – 20%. Nintendo Switch version sold more, but sales are pretty low. Not too surprising, since Fortnite is available for free on the Nintendo eShop (this version does come with in-game items and virtual currency, but you just cannot beat free for most people!)
  • [PS4] [NSW] Daedalus: The Awakening of Golden Jazz # <ADV> (Arc System Works) (¥8.990) – 30%. Lowish debut, not unexpected for the Jake Hunter series unfortunately. PlayStation 4 version sold more.
  • [NSW] Peach Ball: Senran Kagura <TBL> (Marvelous) (¥4.980) – 40%. Pretty decent debut, but sales are bound to be pretty frontloaded…

Dengeki (Week 49)

Dengeki report slightly better sales for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with 1 235 000 units (including copies from the Nintendo Switch bundle). The sell-through ratio is also better: 75%. In just 3 days, the latest entry in the Super Smash Bros. series has already sold over 1 million units, a feat no previous game was able to achieve.

Just like Media Create, Dengeki point out that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has the best debut ever for a Super Smash Bros. game, doing even better than Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (949 000 units sold at launch, and 2.49 million units LTD). In fact, it even outsold Splatoon 2 (646 000 units at launch), though it’s unlikely it will do so when it comes to total sales (2.75 million units LTD for Splatoon 2).

With the holiday season now in full swing, Dengeki expect Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sales to reach 2 million units before the end of the year.

Also, Dengeki report that Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle sold 13 000 units, on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 combined.

Hardware-wise, the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate led to a major increase in Nintendo Switch sales: 289 000 units sold this week, which is 2.7 times higher than during the previous one. That’s actually the best week ever for the console… after launch week, that is (337 000 units). For Dengeki, the game was successful in attracting lots of new users.

Also, as mentioned on Wednesday, the Nintendo Switch has now sold over 6 million units (6.13 million units to be precise), and it took it 1 years and 9 months to do so. The attach rate for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is exceedingly high: 20.1%, which means that 1/5 of all Nintendo Switch owners bought the game. Dengeki expect the attach rate to go even higher in the future.
