Japan: more sales data for Week 48 2018, Persona Q2, November 2018 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 48)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that total Software sales topped 503 000 units, which is 83.44% of Week 47 sales. Despite the large number of new releases (17 in total), sales dropped again because said many of those new releases didn’t even sell 10 000 units. As a result, the ratio of new games in total Software sales dropped even further, from 34.92% to 25.76%.

On the other hand, Hardware sales are on the rise with 153 000 units sold, which is 105.82% of Week 47 sales. Nintendo Switch sales slightly increased thanks (in part) to the release of the Minecraft bundle, with 111.23% of Week 47 sales.

Unfortunately for Atlus, Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth really underperformed, especially compared to its predecessor. It sold over 50% less, with 80 000 units sold during launch week (Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth sold 187 000 units in the first few days).

The sell-through ratio is also noticeably worse: 64.54% vs. 80.64%. Given sales for this kind of games are always concentrated on the first couple of weeks (especially true for a release that came so late in the lifecycle of the Nintendo 3DS), it looks like retailers will have trouble selling all the remaining units without resorting to price drops.

Quite interestingly, this is the best debut for a Nintendo 3DS game this year: even better than Etrian Odyssey X and its 72 000 units sold at launch. If you needed another proof that the Nintendo 3DS market has (nearly) completely collapsed this year, here’s one! For Media Create, Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth actually fared rather well in light of the current state of the market.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 49)

This week, we have the Day-1 sell-through for a couple of Nintendo Switch titles:

  • [PS4] [NSW] Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle (Capcom) – 40%. Rather decent debut. PlayStation 4 version sold more;
  • [NSW] Little Friends: Dogs & Cats (Imagineer). Really poor debut, but that’s hardly a surprise; market really isn’t into Nintendogs-like games these days, especially on expensive consoles!

Dengeki (Week 48)

Dengeki report that Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth sold about 76 000 units at launch, with a lower sell-through ratio than the one reported by Media Create: about 60% (no big surprise since sales reported are also lower). That’s quite the drop compared to the previous entry, Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth (188 000 units at launch, and 268 000 units LTD).

As for Kamen Rider Climax Scramble Zi-O, it sold about 14 000 units at launch, and Lapis x Labyrinth sold about 9 000 units on the two platforms it was released on (with 4 028 units on Nintendo Switch specifically). Meanwhile, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee keeps enjoying strong sales: about 90 000 units this week, and over 870 000 units LTD. Finally, Super Mario Party saw its sales boom to 38 000 units (403 000 units LTD) thanks to the bundle with the two Joy-Cons.

This week, Dengeki also share data about November (and more precisely the period going from October 29th to December 2nd, so 5 weeks in total). Unfortunately, sales are once again down Year on Year:

  • Hardware: 650 000 units (-19.7%) / 19.6 billion Yen (-13.2%)
  • Software: 2 440 000 units (-36.7%) / 15.4 billion Yen (-32.2%)
  • Total: 35 billion Yen (-22.7%)

While November did see the release of a major game (Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee), there wasn’t any other game that sold over 300 000 units. As such, it’s no wonder the market as a whole is down, and for the 5th month in a row. Naturally, Dengeki is hoping that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will help the market recover.

Here’s the Top 3 Software for November:

  1. [NSW] Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! (The Pokémon Company)
  2. [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo): 128 000 units
  3. [PS4] Battlefield V (EA): 126 000 units
