Japan: more sales data for Week 47 2019, Holiday season 2018 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 48)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a couple of Nintendo Switch titles (games and platforms listed from best-selling to worst-selling):

  • [PS4][NSW] SD Gundam G Generations Cross Rays (Bandai-Namco) – 70%. A pretty solid debut!
  • [PS4][NSW][PSV] Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Infinite Combatte – 50%. An ok debut for a game that’s bound to be pretty frontloaded.

Dengeki (Week 47)

Dengeki report that Pokémon Sword and Shield sold about 408 000 units during its second week, with the versions breakdown as follows:

  • Pokémon Sword: 199 367 units (699 120 units LTD)
  • Pokémon Shield: 120 613 units (468 242 units LTD)
  • Dual Pack: 43 947 units (298 559 units LTD)

Since launch, the game has now sold about 1 764 000 units.

The second week drop for Pokémon Sword and Shield is a nice 69%, which is better than Pokémon X and Y (73.5%) and Pokémon Sun and Moon (81.2%). This bodes pretty well for the upcoming holiday season, with strong sales expected through the rest of the year.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing much interesting this week. The top of the charts is still dominated by the usual suspects, including Ring Fit Adventure (26 000 units this week, and 294 000 units LTD), and Luigi’s Mansion 3 (24 000 units this week, and 278 000 units LTD).

Here’s how the various entries fared this week:

  • DIABOLIK LOVERS GRAND EDITION for Nintendo Switch (Idea Factory): 1 613 units. Another late port of an Otome game with poor sales;
  • BLAZBLUE CROSS TAG BATTLE Special Edition (Arc System Works): 2 259 units sold, with 835 units on Nintendo Switch. An unsurprisingly poor debut for an expanded re-release of a fighting game that already didn’t set the charts on fire when it was originally released.

This week, there was no new release to compensate for the expected drop in sales following the launch of Pokémon Sword and Shield, but Hardware sales remain at a high level:

  • Software: 1.08 million units (-35.3%)
  • Hardware: 196 000 units (-0.9%)

With the holiday season just around the corner, Dengeki take a look back at the holiday season last year (November 2018 to Week 1 2019):

  • Software: 9.22 million units (-6.6% Year on Year) / 78.4 billion Yen (+10.4%)
  • Hardware: 2.59 million units (+3.4%) / 61.6 billion Yen (+5.7%)
  • Total: 140 billion Yen (+8.3%)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was a big hit with 2.67 million units sold during that period, which had a noticeable impact on Nintendo Switch sales:

  • Hardware: 1.86 million units (+25.3% Year on Year)
  • Software: 6.6 million units (+98%)

Thanks to the games and consoles being more expensive, the market actually generated more revenue than the previous year. In fact, it was the third year in a row that sales increased during the holiday season in Japan.
