Japan: more sales data for Week 46 2019, Pokémon Sword and Shield (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 47)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for just one Nintendo Switch game (platforms listed from best-selling to worst-selling):

  • [PS4] [NSW] BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle – Special Edition <FTG> (Arc System Works) (¥6.800) – 30%

Dengeki (Week 46)

Dengeki report that Pokémon Sword and Shield sold 1 357 000 units at launch at retail, and also provide a breakdown of each version:

  • Pokémon Sword: 499 753 units
  • Pokémon Sword: 347 629 units
  • Double Pack: 254 612 units (counted as two units in the total above, and in Famitsu’s own report)

As you can see, Pokémon Sword was the most popular by a significant margin, which is pretty unusual as the two versions of a Pokémon game tend to sell the same. But it’s not the first time it happened: Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! was also more popular than Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!.

Dengeki report that the sell-through ratio varies slightly depending on the version, but it’s at 80% on average.

Here’s how the previous two mainline entries (excluding third-versions and remakes) sold:

  • Pokémon X and Y: 2.05 million units at launch, 4.22 million units LTD
  • Pokémon Sun and Moon: 2.21 million units at launch, 4.03 million units LTD

At retail, Pokémon Sword and Shield saw a major drop in sales compared to its predecessors, but if you factor in digital sales, the drop is much less significant. According to The Pokémon Company, the game sold over 2 million units at retail + digital, putting it at the same level as Pokémon X and Y. Digital sales on Nintendo 3DS were pretty much insignificant, so a direct comparison is actually possible here.

Just like Famitsu earlier this week, Dengeki also point out that Pokémon Sword and Shield actually outsold Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at retail (1.23 million units at launch, and 3.40 million units LTD).

Other than Pokémon, there was not much activity at the top of the charts. Here’s how the other entries fared this week:

  • Super Street: Racer (Kemco): 688 units. A really poor debut.

Hardware-wise, the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield had a noticeable impact on sales. The Nintendo Switch sold 187 000 units (+87.8%), with 91 000 units for the OG model, and 97 000 units for the Lite model. It seems the game was quite successful at bringing new customers in, and it will certainly be interesting to see how the console ends up selling during the upcoming holiday season.

Thanks to that massive increase in sales, the Nintendo Switch completely dominated Hardware and Software sales last week, with a rather impressive market share:

  • Hardware: 94.8%
  • Software: 91.3%

And that great week for the Nintendo Switch had a noticeable impact on the market as a whole… not surprising, when the console has a +90% market share:

  • Hardware: 198 000 units sold (+75.5%)
  • Software: 1.86 million units sold (x3.5)
