Japan: more sales data for Week 46 2018, Pokémon: Let’s Go (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 46)

Today (one day earlier than usual due to Friday being a public holiday in Japan), Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that total Software sales topped 959 000 units, which is 370.70% of Week 45 sales. Unsurprisingly, that major increase is pretty much exclusively due to the launch of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! on Nintendo Switch.

Also, the release of the two bundles for that game, as well as the one for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (ahead of the game’s launch, on December 7th), boosted Nintendo Switch sales: they nearly quadrupled, reaching 200 000 units. Unfortunately, the track did not share the sales breakdown for those two bundles, so we don’t know how many units they sold.

Back to Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!. It sold about 661 000 units at launch, which is quite lower than Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (about 1 163 000 units at launch). But not only did it sell about 500 000 units less than its predecessor, its sell-through ratio is also quite lower: 62.96% for Let’s Go, Pikachu!, and 51.80% for Let’s Go, Eevee. In comparison, previous entries in the series had a much higher sell-through ratio at launch: about 70% to 80%.

Of course, The Pokémon Company did not really overship the game: retailers will have no trouble selling the remaining units, especially as word of mouth is especially strong for this game (besides, the holiday season is just around the corner).

Media Create point out that this game made some major changes to the Pokémon formula, even going as far as incorporating elements from Pokémon GO, in an attempt to attract a new audience. Unfortunately, it’s hard to say whether that was successful or not at this point in time.

Since Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! is a key title, Media Create is going to pay special attention to it during the holiday season and New Year.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 47)

Nothing this week.

Dengeki (Week 46 2018)

Dengeki report significantly lower sales for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!: about 603 000 units (nearly 60 000 units less than Media Create, which is rather unusual). Here’s the sales breakdown for the two versions:

  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! – 332 193 units
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! – 270 929 units

Dengeki point out that Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! has the best opening for any game released this Fiscal Year, which really isn’t that much of an achievement due to the lack of major releases until now.

Quite interestingly, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! is by far the most successful Pokémon game on a home console. It sold nearly three times as much as Pokémon Stadium 2, released back in 2000 on Nintendo 64 (227 000 units at launch, and 821 000 units LTD). Of course, the fact that the Nintendo Switch is a hybrid helped a lot, because a mainline Pokémon game would never have been released on a traditional home console!

Naturally, Dengeki is quite looking forward to see how much sales grow once the holiday season is in full swing.

This week, Super Mario Party sold 19 000 additional units, bringing the total to 345 000 units LTD.

Hardware-wise, Dengeki report that the Nintendo Switch sold about 179 000 units, which is 3.2 times what it sold the previous week. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! contributed to the boost, helped by the two bundles, and the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bundle. With this game, Nintendo is clearly trying to attract new users to the Nintendo Switch, and this week’s show that it seems to be working so far.

By the way, this is the first time since Week 1 that Nintendo Switch sales topped 100 000 units this year. Hopefully, sales will remain above that level until Week 1 2019!
