Japan: more sales data for Week 41 2019, Disney Tsum Tsum Festival, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 42)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through data for a couple of Nintendo Switch games (games listed from best-selling to worst-selling):

  • [NSW] Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (Marvelous) – 60%. A pretty good performance. Hopefully, Marvelous have prepared enough copies for an additional shipment, or some stores might run out of copies during the weekend;
  • [NSW] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition <RPG> (Spike Chunsoft) (¥6.480) – 50%. A fairly solid start for a late port;
  • [NSW] Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) (¥5.980) – 30%. Fairly average debut.

Dengeki (Week 41)

Dengeki report that Disney Tsum Tsum Festival sold about 31 000 units at launch, with a satisfactory sell-through for a family-friendly game expected to sell in the long-run: 40%. As for Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition, it sold 25 000 additional units, bringing total sales to 399 000 units. Finally, the Nintendo Switch port of Yo-kai Watch 1 didn’t do too hot, with only 10 000 units sold at launch.

Next, here’s how the other entries fared this week:

  • Genso Kissa Enchanté (Idea Factory): 2 963 units sold. In line with most Otome releases on Nintendo Switch;
  • The Alliance Alive HD Remastered (FuRyu): about 4 500 units sold, with 2 632 units sold on Nintendo Switch. Rather average debut for a HD Remaster of game that already didn’t set the charts on fire when it was released on Nintendo 3DS;
  • Arc of Alchemist for Nintendo Switch (Idea Factory): 753 units sold. Really poor performance, even for a late port of a niche game.

This week, Dengeki share some more data for the first half of the current Fiscal Year (April 1st to September 29th). To the surprise of no one, Nintendo was the most successful publisher thanks to various popular games:

  • Super Mario Maker 2 (600 000 units sold)
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (300 000 units sold)
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses (270 000 units sold)

Not only Nintendo is once again #1, its market share also rose from 30.3% to 32.3%.

Bandai-Namco is #2, thanks to popular port of Tsuri Spirits Nintendo Switch Version (190 000 units sold), and various games based on popular IPs.

As for the other publishers:

  • 3) Square-Enix (thanks to Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition), up Year on Year
  • 4) Konami (thanks to their sports game), up Year on Year
  • 5) Capcom (thanks to Monster Hunter World: Iceborn, which sold 350 000 units and was the second best-selling game during the period)

Both Sony and Microsoft dropped from the Top 5 due to a lack of major titles.

As usual, it’s pretty much the same companies dominating sales in Japan, though the major releases during the second half of the Fiscal Year should shake things up a bit. For example, The Pokémon Company is pretty much guaranteed to join the Top 5 thanks to Pokémon Sword and Shield.
